If there were 10 stars I would give Dr Murphy a 10+! That includes his staff from front desk to his assistants. The wait time was less than 10 min. Everyone was so pleasant and sincere in making me feel welcome. What is extremely important to me is for my healthcare providers to actually listen to me, welcome & respect my input and not make me feel like an imposition in their very busy day. In my opinion Dr. Murphy is the best orthopedic surgeon in central Alabama. While they were in high school he operated on my son’s shoulder and my stepson’s torn ACL they were both fully recovered and able to play the following season. So far so good, my first experience with the Houghton Clinic and Dr Murphy, I found everyone with whom I interacted with, highly competent, very friendly and willing to help and answer questions about my issue/condition...going forward we have a plan in place and I'm looking forward to both my next visit and to the relief I believe they will help provide for in my right shoulder. Second Visit was my Post Op follow and it up went really well too. I had a total shoulder replacement of my right (primary) shoulder in May 2024. I was quite concerned about undertaking the procedure. I had chronic pain that impacted my life over a period of 5-10 years, yet I still struggled with my decision to undergo this surgery. My outcome was incredible and I only wish I had done it sooner! Surgery went perfectly well. There was almost no pain at all, and my biggest worry of the new joint not functioning well was unfounded. I have super range of motion!! The recovery process was better than I could have imagined. Dr. Murphy is an extremely talented surgeon. I highly recommend him for investigating and resolving your shoulder problems. He's got a great care team, too. His physician assistant (Nate) impressed me from the outset. I will return to have my left shoulder replaced soon and I'm looking forward to it with no hesitancy at all. Do yourself a favor and don't don't put-off your shoulder replacement surgery. When I was 76 years old, I fell on the tennis court and injured my hip. Dr. Murphy did such a great job with my hip surgery, I was back on the tennis court in six months. Seven years later, I fell and dislocated my shoulder. There is no one else I trust more than Dr. Murphy to oversee this injury and have me back on the tennis courts again.Patient Submitted Review

I had surgery on my left shoulder about 4 years ago due to a work injury. I was 58 years old and had torn my rotator cuff, labrum and had done quite a bit of damage to the bicep tendon...a lot of damage for such a small incident. I went to Dr. Murphy for an examination (2nd or 3rd that the State had sent me to) and after x-rays and an MRI he set up surgery. I had experienced minor surgeries before (if you can call heart stents minor) , but this was totally under general anesthesia and no post surgery hospital stay anticipated. Dr. Murphy was very casual, upbeat and reassuring pre-surgery and the surgery itself was a breeze...I slept right through it, imagine that! When I awoke post surgery, I was groggy, as expected, but in no pain. Dr. Murphy had inserted a catheter into my neck and applied what he called a "pain ball" (don't know what the actual name is), which did a fantastic job controlling any pain. It worked so well that I HAD NO PAIN AT ALL! If you're having this surgery and can have one of these GET IT. The only downside (very small) was that my thumb was completely numb until the pain ball was depleted a couple of days later, then the feeling returned. I came through surgery with flying colors and did the rehab with NO problem. Dr. Murphy prescribed a device that circulated CHILLED water through it in lieu of just ice and this helped tremendously...I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THAT YOU ASK FOR IT. Through this entire surgery and recovery, although prescribed pain meds, I never had to take ANY. I HAD ZERO PAIN...NONE. I know I was lucky, but I attribute my easy surgery and lack of pain to a really great surgeon...Dr. Randall L. Murphy. He did an excellent job and his only and best advice during my recovery was, "just don't do anything stupid to screw up my repairs". Sounded like good advice...I took it and have had no problems with the results of his work.Read more
