Dr. Sloan performed a knee replacement operation on a very close friend a couple of months ago and her experience from initial consultation to today (nine weeks later) has been outstanding. He thoroughly explained what to expect ahead of time and has spent as much time answering any follow up questions as necessary to keep her fully informed. I went to Dr. Sloan to have him look at the x-rays of my knees and to ask his opinion about whether I should have knee replacement surgery. Since I don’t have knee pain when walking or using the stairs even though they both show bone on bone and arthritis I was hoping he would say I could wait. Took me 2 years to find Dr. Sloan. I'm leaving this review to help someone else find an excellent surgeon.I had constant pain with every step for 2 years.There are a lot of good surgeons in Massachusetts. Not all good surgeons are good doctors. Dr. Sloan is the whole package. My recoveryrehab was as important to him as the actually surgery. He must have some kinda of OCD because everything was thought through.I had all my post op medications BEFORE my surgical date. Much more convenient than going to the pharmacy all groggy from anesthesia.Home care was planned and implemented. Emerson's home rehab is very good. Then out patient PT.My pain was taken seriously. I've gone to Orthopedic Affiliate for over 20 years. When my surgeon retired a couple of years ago, he referred me to Dr. Sloan. Most recently I injured my back, but with two hip replacements and two prior back surgeries, it was impossible to tell what was causing the pain. I was blessed to get a same day appointment due to a cancellation. Staff was wonderful in handling this. Dr. Sloan listened carefully to my description of the injury and resulting pain and limitations. After a thorough exam he ordered immediate tests and was able to rule out my hip as the problem. He then referred me to Emerson Hospital's Spine Center and took the time to personally call them on my behalf to insure that I would be seen as soon as possible, and by someone who would know my surgical background. As I was in a great deal of back pain, I was most grateful that staff was able to schedule me the same day due to a cancellation. Dr. Soan was kind, thorough, and immediately ordered testing to determine whether my hip or spine was at fault. Thankfully, my artificial hip was in excellent condition. I saw Ddr. Sloan for my second hip replacement. He was recommended by my primary physician after discussion concerns from my first hip replacement. Dr. Sloan was thorough and kind. He explained the proceedure and the changes from the replacement of my other hip. He always asked if I had any questions and asked me to call if anything came up before our next appointment. His staff were quick and responsive as well - from filling out papers needed for my employer and state to responding with questions about next steps. My recovery was amazingly easy and I was back to work in just a few weeks compared to months on the previous surgery. I had an unexpected skin reaction to the adhesives this time around and when Dr. Sloan learned of this, he responded with caring treatment and follow up visits. Dr. Sloan was kind, patient, informative and easy to work with. Instead of making me try more, different treatments, he looked at my images and said I was a good candidate for a hip replacement. After almost six years of progressively deteriorating hip issues, I did my research and found Dr. Sloan. I have not once doubted that my decision to choose him was, without a doubt, the very best choice I could have made. He is very well-known in the Emerson Hospital network, and everyone I mentioned his name to along the way agrees that he is the best you can find. He is young, bright, and a perfectionist (but in a GOOD way!). Don't be afraid that you will end up with one hip higher than the other or with a limp after the operation - Dr. Sloan uses the newest computer technology to be sure everything is as close to perfect as possible. His straightforward manner, good eye contact, and obvious confidence in the latest techniques available in his field will reinforce your confidence in him. Not once did I have any doubt that I was in the absolute best of hands with Dr. Sloan and his support staff - there was no "before surgery nervousness"! The nurses at Emerson Hospital wondered why I was not the least bit on edge having two hip replacement surgeries less than two months apart.
