I recently visited Hillside Family Medicine as a new patient after a less-than-ideal experience at my previous clinic (not with my doctor specifically), and I was blown away by the difference in care and professionalism here. From the moment I walked in, the front office staff set a warm and welcoming tone. I wish I had gotten her name — I believe she may be Alaska Native — but she was incredibly polite, friendly, and had excellent phone etiquette. It's small touches like that which immediately put you at ease. Rachel Coleman's CNA, Katelyn, also stood out. She was not only knowledgeable and kind but probably the best "blood poker" I've ever encountered! She took her time, was careful and confident, and made sure not to poke more than twice — she clearly takes pride in her skill and it shows. As for Rachel Coleman, PA, I can’t say enough good things. She took her time to listen, explain all my care options, and made sure I understood the medications she was recommending — including helping me find more affordable solutions. She's personable, lively, and easy to open up to — exactly what you'd want in a PA. It truly felt like she cared. I just hope Aetna continues to keep them in-network, because it’s already hard enough to find high-quality primary care in Alaska. I have been using Hilside Family Medicine for the last several years as a result of friends recommendations. Very happy with the the care I receive. I have been seen by several of the doctors for various things including annual checkups. I get treatment and advice that when I follow definitely helps me. I like that they pursue non prescription based options first. When appropriate they will prescribe medicine when needed. I went in for ankle pain a few months back and found out I have some arthritis in that ankle. The doctor advised me on treatment and care. I followed her instructions and the pain slowly went away! I first met the doctor on a virtual visit because I live in a remote area off the road system. She helped me get some specialist appointments from that virtual visit and today when I met her in person, she was as wonderful as she was at the virtual visit. I do not think it is possible to adequately describe how amazing the Physicians are at Hillside Family Medicine. My provider, Dr. Julie Stewart is the most kind and compassionate physician I have ever seen. I have been seeing her for a little over 2 years and I have NEVER felt dismissed, judged, or as if my concerns are not valid. I actually look forward to my appointments because I know that my physician sees me as human. I have seen many providers over the course of my lifetime, and I do not think I have ever actually enjoyed my experience with any of them until now. The office staff is always pleasant. The medical staff is kind, compassionate, and also listens when I speak. I have never felt dehumanized at Hillside, and I recommend them every chance I get. My husband is also a patient of Hillside and sees Dr. John Nolte. I met Dr. John for the first time this past week and to say he is compassionate and caring is an understatement. I watched his interaction with my husband and observed a kind, compassionate human who listens, and engages with his patient. Getting my husband to openly discuss concerns is huge, and I am very grateful to Dr. John for his kindness and compassion for his patient. I also at one time had the pleasure of seeing Dr. Miriam Nolte when Dr. Stewart was not available. Dr. Miriam spent the time to understand my concerns, actively listened and engaged with me, and then discussed our plan forward. At no time did I feel as if she did not know who I was even though I had never seen her before. If you are looking for a medical group who cares about their patients, who actively listen and engage, and treat you like the human being you are, I cannot recommend Hillside strongly enough. Last year was the first time I was seen at HFM by Dr. Nolte and his staff. The time he took with me and his vast years of experience & knowledge were unmatched. I’m almost 54yoa and have seen many doctors over my life time. Dr. Nolte is one of the most kindest and understanding doctors I’ve ever seen. He listens to your concerns and gives you honest feedback. To the point where, if he wouldn’t have it done, he won’t recommend you having it done - whatever “it” is for you. So, I came back this year for my yearly physical and after leaving his office, realized I will not go anywhere else. It’s hard to find an office & doctor who talks to you straight, takes the time to listen and also laughs or tell jokes with you. It’s apparent, he’s more concerned about the patient than about making a dollar. I call it “old school”! There’s something to be said about an old school doctor who cares about the person but also stays up to date with all the medical world and knows his stuff. What a great place! I’ve been here to see both Dr. Julie Wilson and Dr. Julie Stewart for multiple health appointments and I would never go anywhere else. They are both wonderful and so informative. I recently had an IUD placed with Dr. Julie Stewart and she couldn’t have made the experience better. She wasn’t only efficient but made sure I was as comfortable as I could be and took extra measures to make somewhat of a painful experience laughable and quick. The doctors take extra time to make sure you leave feeling like all of your questions are thoroughly answered. The nurses there also have the best bedside manner and are very sweet. And for the girls at the front, me also working as a medical receptionist, I can tell it’s very busy up there for them but when you check in/out they’re sure to give you their full attention and handle it with grace and ease. Hillside Family Medicine is Awesome! My family has been using Hillside for 15 years and we have always found the staff to be professional and caring. On my first visit 15 years ago I was seen by Dr.Scott DeBerard. Dr. DeBerard has been our primary physician ever since. I personally feel that he saved my life by conducting through tests during physicals and prescribing the necessary medications when needed to correct some serious medical conditions.
