Real reviews! Dr Shaaf took my situation very seriously. He and his entire staff have a wonderful vibe, they're friendly and personable, and you can feel that they get along well with each other as well as their patients. Dr Shaaf is an expert in his craft. His exam was thorough & they documented all of my eye measurements & took pictures when necessary of anything out-of-the ordinary. I felt in extremely good hands that this doctor will be able to closely track my condition over time to see it changes, which is really the best you could ask for a not-currently-concerning condition. While I was there, I also asked him about my dry eyes & he administered drops to determine the degree of dry-eye and gave me plugs during my appointment. He was very clear in his instructions. Dr Allen is amazing. I had her do both of my cataract surgeries and now use her as my eye doctor. Both surgeries went amazing, In my most recent appointment she spotted me tilting my head and raised the possibility that my double vision issue is due to 4th nerve palsy. I looked back at a 40+ year old photo and saw that my head was tilted way back then. I took my elderly father to see Dr. Taunton for his annual exam yesterday. Dr. Taunton has been seeing Dad since 2008, and is the most professional, caring, gentle, positive OD I've ever met! He is generous with his time and manner of accommodating his patients to reach a good assessment of what the patient's needs are. As we age, our capacity to successfully participate in an exam diminishes. Not only our eyesight, but our hearing, ability to follow directions, and physical ability to even get up into the exam chair could impact the quality of an eye exam. His medical-surgical training and numerous years of experience speak volumes about the man. First of all, Dr. Topilow is a great communicator, she took all the time I needed during my original consult and then again pre-op. Secondly, Dr. Topilow is a surgical artist with a trait of pefectionism. She took at least 20-minutes measuring and marking up both eyelids prior to surgery. Every step was well communicated to me throughout the process. It was virtually painless, I only felt the local anesthesia injections, which were minor. Afterwards, before the swelling started to set in I was told I looked 20-years younger. And now I have a clear field of vision for the first time in a long time. The results so far are incredible. I woke up with absolutely no pain or vision issues. I can't even see the stitches she perfectly hid in the eyelid crease. Luis did the beginning of my eye exam and was funny and patient as the bright lights shone in my eyes. And Dr. Kirk was extremely helpful when he came in. I intend this to be my regular ophthalmologist going forward. Dr. Taunton has been my eye doctor for over 30 years. He is kind, gentle, knowledgeable, and thorough. There is a history of glaucoma in my family, and my eye pressure reads on the high side. He was able to reassure me that my overly thick corneas contribute to the high reading, that my eye pressure is normal, and that I'm not more likely to get glaucoma because of it. The office is organized and efficient. There are usually earlier arrivals waiting in the waiting areas. Dr Bokosky is thorough and informative. He is a nice guy. I had a previous cornea transplant in Houston in 1992. When I consulted other Drs, they declined to perform cataract surgery and recommended Dr Bokosky. The original cornea transplant Dr told me 10 to 18 years expectancy. Dr Bokosky tested and examined my transplant and determined that he would remove the cataract and install an intraocular lens. I had Dr Morton fix my right eye excess tearing, he also fixed the left eye too. After the surgery, both eyes were puffy and bloodshot but no pain. The swelling went down in several weeks. This place is great! The atmosphere is kind of like being in a busy Italian restaurant that is set in an old former home. Tonya (there are lots of ways to spell that. Hope I got it right.) is an angel. She checks your vision and is just so very sweet! If you are fortunate enough to have Dr Sheils as your physician, you have yet another angel to help you. Heavy eyelids run in my family so I was familiar with the surgery and knew I would be undergoing a blepharoplasty at some point. I 1st became a patient at Eye Care of La Jolla in about 2002. I was treated by Dr Paul Michelson, MD. He restored my vision from legal blindness secondary to corticosteroid therapy. Since Dr. Paul Michelson's retirement my exceptional care continues with his son Dr. David Michelson. I have a multitude of eye diseases, which a number cause blindness. I credit both Dr. Michelsons fo my vision being nearly as good today with R× glasses as it was about 20 years ago. Dr. Paul & Dr. David Michelson are two of the most professional, caring, compationate physicians & individuals, that you could be so fortunate to care for your vision concerns. I can't say enough about how amazing the service was here. My mom had eye surgery to fix her droopy eye lids. It was affecting her eye sight so it needed to get done. Her appt was super early at 6:30am. My mom was pretty nervous because they were putting her under full anesthesia. Right when we walked in the door Keyanna greeted us with this warm and welcoming tone that really relaxed my mom and I. She walked us through the steps calmly and gave us a tour of the facility. Totaly sweet and nice. After that Colleen came over and took my mom to the surgery room. She explained what was going to be done and what time to come back. I walked to breakfast and came back and sure enough, they were done 2 minutes after the time she told me. After the procedure she explained the after care and helped me put my mom in the car. Dr. Bokosky just completed my second cataract surgery and I now have 20/20 vision in both eyes. I couldn't be happier. After reading many negative reviews I had my concerns but his medical expertise was rated very high. He is busy and matter of fact, but I believe he is trying to help as many patients as he can. It is a busy operation and a few delays happened but I think that is to be expected with all of the patients they are trying to handle. All of the staff were very pleasant and kind, and professional. No complaints from me. I think old patients don't realize this is a big operation and if they want warm and fuzzy, perhaps they should go elsewhere. I was referred to this office by another ophthalmologist to diagnose my eye problem. I was seen on a Friday morning, diagnosed, had my surgery scheduled, and went through the pre-op procedure in one visit. Four days later the surgery was complete, and my eye problem had been rectified with zero discomfort or side effects. The entire staff from the doctors, office staff, and nursing staff were all extremely efficient, kind, knowledgeable, and were sure all of my questions/concerns were addressed. The best in ophthalmology work here. I came in without an appointment, 20/50 vision , due to a horrible eye infection and was still treated with the utmost care and importance. I have an awful eye infection that got out of control cuz I went to the wrong people before I came here. Anyway, The front desk girls are friendly as can be. Charlie took me into the exam room after only 10 mins of waiting in the waiting room. I was very upset about my eye infection and he was very understanding. Everyone is great here. Dr vasile came in with her warm smile and her assistant Kathy was so on top of things, promptly took notes down as Dr. Vasile assessed my situation. Very intelligent yet humble doctor. I left with four different eye medications. A week later my eye infection is almost gone and I can almost see normal again!!! I have zero complaints. God bless you all. Thank God I came here. I don't generally like to go to eye Doctors but my experience with him and his staff far exceeded my expectations and relieved me of my worries. I decided to go to an out of network optometrist for my new Rx. Upon arriving to the office I was greeted by they're receptionist Debbie. She was very helpful and guided me through the necessary first time patient paper work. Then they're assistant Becky was so professional in my exam process, I had never had such a thorough exam. Dr Philip Taunton is an excellent doctor. So patient, thorough and willing to work so hard to get the best possible reading of your eyes. I love Dr. Taunton because I feel he has so much integrity and will always do what is best for my eye health. I recently had an eye emergency and was seen within 40 minutes (as soon as I could drive there), which makes me feel incredibly good that the office was so VERY accommodating. I was seen by a new doctor to the office, Dr. Christiana Vasile and she was amazingly thorough in her exam. I have a complicated eye case and have been to many, many eye doctors in my lifetime . . . trust me that she is excellent in her work of taking care of your eyes. I went to Dr. Morton for drooping eyelids. When he examined me I also decided to do a lower lift. Dr. Morton was excellent! After 6 months I returned for a follow up and we decided to make the upper eyelids more even. When I first went to him, both my eyelids were very uneven. After the second (and very fast) surgery, I have excellent results. My upper eyelids are even and my friends have told me how rested I look due to my lower lids. I was lucky enough to see Dr. Ciuffredda, who is one of the best eye doctors I have ever had! I have also seen Dr. Taunton on occasion and can say that both of them we wonderful. I have bought about 4 pairs of eyeglasses, contacts and 2 pairs of sunglasses from Eye Care of San Diego in the past year or two that I have been going there and I have been extremely happy with every purchase. I am a law student and live out-of-state and they are very good about getting me appointments when I am home for a short time and sending my glasses and contacts when needed. Most Dr.'s do not cater like this which is why it I think I am so happy with them, they make it easy to see! What is also nice is how many designer frames they have. I am a little bit of a fashionista and hate how most optometrist offices do not have a wide variety of glasses and sunglasses, especially when you need a special prescription. I will continue to go back to Eye Care of San Diego for all of my eye care needs. Also, in terms of parking, it's no mall lot but it is a medical office, so I wasn't expecting a giant garage! I, too, almost never write a review but after my last visit with Dr. Michelson I just have to praise him and the whole Eye Care of La Jolla team ! As a physician myself, though not an ophthalmologist, I understand the subtleties of medicine. Medical decisions, and even some diagnoses, are rarely " black and white" absolutes. Dr. Michelson has the intelligence, compassion and judgement to guide patients through the decision making process of relative pros and cons. This is an uncommon and undervalued talent ! What a fantastic experience I had with Dr. Michelson ! He is extremely intelligent, went to Yale for college and Johns Hopkins for medical school, as well as compassionate. He took the time and was able to explain my complicated conditions in a way I finally could understand. I have been to many eye doctors due to these problems, but was never able to understand as much as I did after Dr. Michelson patiently explained things to me. He also listened to all the treatments that I had tried with other doctors then found the one that worked for me ! Finally ! The office is in a beautiful house in Hillcrest, not a sterile medical office building, which is part of its charm. Although the waiting room is usually crowded, it is because of the high quality of care provided by all who work there, and the most I have ever had to wait was twenty minutes. Regard Philip Taunton, O.D., he has been my optometrist, and my wife's and children's, for 15 years. Dr. Taunton is not only a gentleman, but exceedingly bright, intelligent, competent, kind, and knowledgeable. I have always observed Dr. Taunton to maintain the highest level of hygiene and to wash his hands and wipe down his equipment with disinfectant before he examined me. Dr. Taunton has an amazing intuitive and empathetic ability to "see" what you are seeing during a refraction. As the result of Dr. Taunton's guidance, consultation, and refraction skills following my recent bilateral cataract extraction and intraocular lens implants performed by Dr. Bokosky, I am now seeing 20/20 uncorrected in both eyes with my Acrysof toric lenses.
