Dr Mai did a total left hip replacement. The procedure didn't take long and the pain has been less than I expected. First the appointment was on time, Very quick and very informative. Immediately went to ray and results were immediate and led to doctors consultation room. The assistant provided much information and explained the x-rays and severity and explained options. Surgeon then arrived with further explanation and treatment recommendations. He recommended steroid injection and gave detailed advice on what to watch for post treatment. Got the injection almost immediately and he stayed to answer a few questions. Today Dr. Matthew Mai and his amazing 👏 professional and friendly team performed a right anterior total hip arthroplasty on me this morning- arriving at 7 a.m. with my walker and my faithful partner. Everything went so well and I am still so absolutely, totally impressed that we were home before 1 p.m.!!! Everything was so well explained by everyone that treated me today! Every step, etc. Yes, I will use my walker for 5 days, 5 days with a cane, then my 2 week post-op with Dr. Matthew Mai, followed by being able to drive after the next 2 weeks! Absolutely beautiful! I'll be able to keep enjoying my now 6 1/2 years of retirement from my wonderful 38 years of teaching as an Exceptional Student Education Teacher 👏 ❤️ I will keep walking pain-free 🚶♀️ for the next 30 years and telling others of my Jesus' purpose 🙏 for me during this time! Today the office was packed due to the unusual snowstorm on the Panhandle, and the staff and doctors processed all as efficiently possible. This was my 2wk follow up from a hip replacement surgery. I had a hip replacement in June then the second one done in September. Both are doing wonderful, I walk a mile 3 or 4 times a week and do the walking in place exercises at the house if it is raining or cold outside. Cannot believe how great I feel. I can't be anymore thankful for being put into the hands of Dr. Mai and Staff! I live in South Atlanta and and after a long 3 year battle of pain, which was not caused by an accident, 15 specialists later which included several pokes and prodding, Dr. Mai researched ALL of my tests and scans and could identify exactly the problem. I had surgery December 13th. Coming from out of state was a little worrisome, but they set up home health care at my home. I have had PT several times a week and the nurse has come to take my vitals and look at the incision. Dr. Mai and his staff are brilliant and I will be sure to recommend them to my Floridian and Georgia friends! No wonder patients come from far away for Dr. Mai!!! Dr Mai is the best hip doctor ever, since I have been going to him he's taken away all my pain in my hips with the injections and I am truly blessed because those injections are lasting me for 6 months or better. Dr. Mai saved my life! I was unable to walk anywhere without severe pain. I was so depressed watching life pass me by. After having my hip surgery with Dr. Mai, I can now enjoy life again! I can attend my grandchildren’s events pain free! I had been told by other doctors for over two years that because of my weight they couldn’t do anything about my issues. This visit was the most efficient physician visit I have ever had. I arrive a few minutes early, checked in, got x-rays, met with the PT, the PA, the doctor, received a treatment, and left the facility in 31 minutes. Amazing. The PA went over my X-rays and explained them thoroughly. The doctor came in and further explained the x-rays and explained my options. He was extremely professional and thorough. I highly recommend Dr.Mai and team. I had a total hip replacement with tendon repair. My experience every step of the way has been above par. I still can’t get over the fact that post op pain ( taking medications as directed) has been primarily pain free, at worst, slightly uncomfortable. I feel like I have a new lease on life. Dr. Mai did a left hip replacement alleviating pain from a 25 year old injury and pudendal nerve entrapment positioning the new hip in such a way I will never suffer again on my left side. It was excruciating pain that escalated in the year and a half prior. His expertise and knowledge is unmatched. Numerous tests were performed and it was suggested I go to Mayo for exploratory surgeries. Because of Dr. Mai's expansive knowledge and keen insight, I am pain free. In addition, his staff is unbelievably empathetic and understanding. This time I was doubled over in pain two days before I saw him and my appointment with Dr Mai wasn't until August and I knew I wasn't going to make it until then so I called the office and asked if I could come in sooner than that but he's booked so his nurse put me on the cancellation list and 5 minutes later I got a call from his office saying that they had an appointment on Tuesday morning can I come in I said YES put me down.. As a self- employed real estate appraiser, the thought of not working for several weeks after the surgery was the reason I had put off getting the procedure done. Much to my surprise, Dr. Mai advised he could to the surgery on an out-patient basis, which I replied, “let’s do this”! My surgery was scheduled for Monday at 7:00 am and I was home by noon (which includes a 45- minute drive home). The following day I was up and walking around with the aid of a walker. By day two I was walking unassisted and taking no pain medication. I went back to work on Friday! After my three-month check-up Dr. Mai gave me a clean bill of health to do whatever I wanted, so the following day I ran 2 miles. Dr. Mai replaced my hip mid-September. Every office visit was a positive experience! The staff are friendly, the office is clean and professional. After being recommended by several health care providers as being the best for hip issues, I saw Dr. Mai for my initial appointment. He confirmed that I needed a total hip replacement. Questions were answered by Dr. Mai and staff and I was scheduled for an anterior approach total hip replacement. I was up, walking and went home the same day of surgery. Home health (PT) followed up for 2 visits. Because I had successfully met my goals, I was discharged after 2 visits. Outpatient PT was not indicated because of how well I was progressing. I had an anterior hip arthroplasty, April 27th and in less than a month I was on my way to pretty normal pre-surgery routine. I had a friend stay with me for safety for 3-4 days and was set up with home PT that began the day after my surgery and continued 3 times/week until my f/u appt 3 weeks later. I was able to take a shower day after my surgery, and it just continually got better from there. Minimal pain after first week if you do what you need to, PT, ICE, rest, pain meds as directed but you should be OK on ALEVE after 1st week or so if you do recommended activities, increasing each day. Post Double Total Hip Replacement. Its a miracle! Dr. Matthew Mai. I have no words. When I ponder for words, the first word that comes to my mind is its a miracle. I stand up or I get out of bed, and I’m waiting for the pain to come but it does not come. It’s gone away! I had my right THR on 01/19/22, and the left one done on 03/02/22. Today I feel like I have been given back my life. I wake up everyday thanking God for Dr. Mai. He is my hero. I was referred to Dr. Mai by Dr. Brett Smith who is also an amazing orthopedic. For about a year or more I got injections in my hips, which helped for a while. The THR was recommended by Dr. Mai but he never pushed me or coerced me to have surgery. He allowed me to make the decision to have my hips replaced when I was ready. Let me tell ya! It was the best decision that I’ve made in my life choosing and trusting Dr. Matthew Mai to literally replace both of my hips back to back. I injured both of my hips doing sit-ups and tore some soft tissue severely. My legs also were also not sitting well in the hip. Let me first say that I recommend Dr Mai for a hip replacement without hesitation. I had multiple health care professionals recommend Dr Mai to me – as the “THE Hip Guy” at the Andrews Institute. I found him to be personable, professional and very knowledgeable - addressing all questions that my wife and I had. I had a hip replacement 10 years ago, and he was very careful to explain to me the differences in that procedure and what he was going to do. The surgery and recovery went just as he explained, and I will tell you that it was MUCH easier than my first hip replacement. It was done out-patient, and I was home by noon (and I was not his first surgery that day). I used a walker for only a day, and a cane for 4 days (only in case I lost balance). Within a week, I was walking 2 miles. I will also say that his staff is excellent, being very responsive when I asked to reschedule my surgery, and with my questions related to COVID vaccinations. Dr. Mai did an amazing job replacing my Hip, I had no idea that I had a bad Hip, I had pain in my lower back, down my leg, in my groin area that is all gone now. I went into Andrews Institute at 5:30 in the morning and I was back at my house in Destin, Florida by 1:30 the same day. I used a walker for six days, on the 7th day I put the walker aside and started walking on my own. Completely amazing at 62 years old to have this type of success. Dr. Mai only focuses on Hips, they are his specialty and I would not recommend anyone else to do the surgery, he goes under the Muscles without cutting any Muscles which severely decreases the down time. I have not surfed in 2 years ago as I could not spread my legs wide enough to sit on the board without excruciating pain last year. Dr. Mai is an amazing hip surgeon & military veteran!! I was living with a rare case of heterotypic ossification for 5 years from a previous surgery. It was so painful I couldn’t sleep on my right side wasn’t able to complete the 1.5 mile run for my PT test that’s required for my military career. And the worst part was the hip would swell so much it looked bigger than my left hip which left me feeling very self conscious. Also, anything that involved standing or walking for longer than 10 mins was very painful. I was limited in mobility as well as quality of life. It was to the point my lower back was starting to hurt. I was initially referred to UAB and was told by the head hip surgeon that he was not comfortable completing the revision surgery so I tried other surgeons and they either flat out refused care or didn’t accept my insurance Tricare. I was at the point where I was beginning to accept that I was going to live like that for the rest of my life, but then I ran into a coworker who referred me to Dr. Mai. It’s been six months since my revision surgery and I can actually sleep on that side without pain & I’m back to running. I’m so thankful for Dr.Mai, I can now live a more active lifestyle and chase my nephew around without pain. Dr. Mai was very thorough and explained what was going on and how he planned to fix it. I had a right anterior total hip replacement 2 1/2 weeks ago. The whole experience was much easier than I anticipated! The surgery itself was painless-when I awoke I didn't believe the surgery was finished. I was concerned that the "break through" pain after the block wore off was going to be much worse- again I was pleasantly surprised. I had discomfort but it was incomparable to the pain I had been living in. I was off my walker in 5 days, walked up/down stairs (under the guidance of my physical therapist) at 7 days and resumed driving at 2 weeks. I am able to enjoy my life again-taking short walks, attending my daughter's volleyball games, socializing without that constant deep joint pain hanging over me. Dr. Mai was the 3rd hip doctor I was referred to because he is one of the few in the area who do hip arthroscopy surgeries. He was kind, informative, and worked quickly to get me taken care of. I had read that hip scope surgery could be a painful and difficult road post-surgery and I needed both hips fixed as sitting was becoming unbearable and I worried about being able to keep working. I have been going to Dr. Mai's office for some time now. I am 77 yrs of age and have abused my body in my previous profession as a Border Patrol Agent and as Federal Criminal investigator. In those days I abused my body chasing illegal personnel through plowed fields at night, chasing drug dealers through the countryside in the desert areas of Laredo Tx with creeks, rivers, canyons and all the picturesque scenery of the wild country. I moved here in 2019 with both hips needing hip replacement. Interviewed a couple ortho docs and knew immediately during my consult with Dr Mai that he was the one for the job. He caringly listened to my story and history of ortho issues, did exam and xrays and together we made a plan. Had L THR 3-2020 and R THR 3-2021. Went to see Dr Mai in April 2020 with weakness and decreased mobility in my Left leg which was not helped by rehab. (I had a total left hip done in November 2016). My goal was to gain more strength and increase mobility in the leg. I could not do a leg left more then an inch off the ground. 11years of hip pain is about to be over. Dr Mai is a fantastic physician and surgeon. Im beyond grateful Dr Mai has taken me on as he's patient. He is highly sought after and is a trail blazer in his field...being one of very few doctors to perform arthroscopic surgery on the hips. Since September, we have gone through series of injections and he is always on time and his staff is cheerful and helpful. I have been under long time care in NY. Dr Mai quickly found areas in need of treatment that other completely doctors missed .He too pointed me into the right direction for referrals. Yesterday I had my four areas in my hip repaired and today, as expected, sore and walker challenged. It will pass. For anyone living in Northwest Florida that is a considering a total hip replacement, I would encourage you to consider the practice of Dr. Matthew Mai, an orthopedic surgeon at the Andrews Institute for Orthopedics in Gulf Breeze, Fla. I am not quick to make recommendations, however in this case I cannot express how pleased I am that I am a patient of Dr. Mai. The short story: my motivation in having the procedure was the desire to pick up my 20 month old granddaughter and not feel as if I might drop her due to pain or weakness in my hip joint. A short two weeks after the operation, I am blessed to do exactly as I wished. Everything about Dr. Mai’s practice is professional, caring, no-nonsense, and efficient. How refreshing to have check-in, x-rays, and appointment consultation occur with minimal to no wait time. In addition to the initial consultation, I was provided with quality information to take home to review that answers all the questions I forgot to ask. The operation was flawless. I was up and walking the same day, and would have been home the same evening if I wasn’t still loopy from the anesthesia. I was home early the following morning. Please understand, this is still surgery with the associated risks of any procedure. There is moderate pain involved due to impact to muscle tissue; however the pain in the arthritic joint is noticeably missing. This is all predicted in the consultation literature. Two weeks to the day, I just finished walking roughly ¾ of mile after having the ball joint of the largest bone in my body cut off. Amazing! I would like to personally thank Dr. Mai and his team for such INCREDIBLE and COMPASSIONATE care. If I could give them a million stars I would. For years, I have suffered with excruciating and debilitating hip pain. Every doctor I have reported to has blown me off and has not taken the initiative to investigate my complaints. However, Dr. Mai knew exactly what I had, what needed to be done and BELIEVED ME! As someone who suffers with a chronic illness, I cannot thank him enough for believing me. Dr. Mai's passion for his work and patients is absolutely amazing. My surgery was successful, my scars are minimal and I was back to work in no time....3 weeks post op and my hip feels SO much better already. I had both my hips replaced in the last 3 months. After 9 months of pain, canes, and walkers I am now doing great. I would highly recommend Dr Mai to anyone. After 5 years of dealing with chronic hip pain I couldn’t take the pain and lack of mobility any longer. As a self- employed real estate appraiser, the though of not working for several weeks after the surgery was the reason I had put off getting the procedure done. Much to my surprise Dr. Mai advised he could to the surgery on an out- patient basis, which I replied, “let’s do this”! My surgery was scheduled for Monday at 7:00 am and I was home by noon (which includes a 45- minute drive home). The following day I was up and walking around with the aid of a walker. By day two I was walking unassisted and taking no pain medication. I went back to work on Friday! After my three- month check-up Dr. Mai gave me a clean bill of health to do whatever I wanted, so the following day I ran 2 miles. If you are having hip issues, I highly recommend Dr. Matt Mai as I have been very pleased with all aspects of my experience with both Dr. Mai and the Andrews Sports Medicine.Patient Submitted Review

My daughter is a 16 yo female soccer player and we had a consult with Dr. Mai for an chronic hip condition 4-5 weeks ago. Dr. Mai was able to diagnose her within a few minutes and gave us our options for correcting her injury. He had prior tests I had done readily available and after a quick, but thorough physical exam discussed my situation in layman's terms. He recommended stretching exercises and they have helped my discomfort significantly. I would definitely seek his expertise in the future. Wow! Definitely impressed with the immediate evaluation and assessment with imaging and then treatment all in in one single visit! All of the staff Nathan Carter APRN, Dr. Mai the super nice receptionist were very nice!
