Outside of medicine, Kirk enjoys hiking and fly fishing, taking full advantage of Idaho’s outdoors. He and his wife stay busy raising their three children and enjoy spending time together as a family.
During my appointment, the specialist remarked, “I see you’ve been busy,” referring to my visits with other providers. The tone felt sarcastic and judgmental, leaving me feeling I had to defend seeking medical care. I have an $18,000 deductible. I do not spend my time and money seeing specialists or undergoing procedures for enjoyment. I doubt many people are “doctor shopping” for colonoscopies. I have never requested pain medication; I am seeking answers and a provider willing to develop a treatment plan. More importantly, I should not have to cite my deductible, lack of medication requests, or number of appointments to prove my concerns are legitimate. Ongoing symptoms can require multiple specialists. I came for medical expertise and compassion, not judgment. I hope this feedback encourages greater empathy toward patients advocating for their health.
