The PA my father saw at CORE, was fine—pleasant, knowledgeable, and helpful in discussing options for my father’s arthritic knees. Unfortunately, the experience was overshadowed when we arrived for an appointment with the orthopedic knee specialist and were told, without explanation, that the doctor does not see patients over 90. I have never encountered a doctor refusing care solely due to age. We voiced our concerns respectfully, and when we asked to speak with the doctor, he explained that he no longer sees patients over 90 for “efficiency” reasons, directing older patients to PAs instead. While I understand the business side of medicine, being turned away because of age can make an older patient feel dismissed and less worthy of care. Because of this policy, my father and I will be seeking care at a practice where all ages are valued equally.
