Abigail Nieuwsma, M.D., is a board-certified ophthalmologist who completed her residency training at the University of Texas Health Science Center – San Antonio. She earned her medical degree from the University of South Dakota Sanford School of Medicine and graduated magna cum laude with a Bachelor of Science in Biology from Bethel University.
During her residency, Dr. Nieuwsma gained extensive experience in medical and surgical ophthalmology, including the management of cataracts, glaucoma, corneal disease, and retinal conditions. She has conducted research in multiple subspecialties such as retina, ocular oncology, cornea, and neuro-ophthalmology, and her work has been presented at national meetings including the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology (ARVO) and the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery (ASCRS).
Dr. Nieuwsma is passionate about patient-centered care and is committed to helping her patients achieve the best possible vision outcomes. She has also demonstrated strong leadership, serving as founder and president of the Ophthalmology Interest Group at USD and volunteering her time to mentor medical students and provide care at community health clinics.
Outside of work, Dr. Nieuwsma enjoys golfing, biking, baking cookies, puzzles, and spending time with her springerdoodle.

A doctor that actually cares is a good thing. Dr Nieuwema is that Dr.

We sent a picture with of her eye when the appointment was booked to be told in a 10 minute consult that it could not be removed there. Then why didnt you just tell us that based off the photo.
Sat for 40 minutes without seeing Dr!
I took off work early for my consultation only to find no one told me I gad to nit wear my contacts fir 10 days. Now I need to take more time off because the appointment had to be rescheduled. Better communication needs to happen for patients.
She was very helpful and explained about the surgery being done on my eye
