Dr. Fielding Callaway, M.D., is a board certified, fellowship trained, orthopedic spine surgeon who specializes in both surgical and nonoperative management of spine conditions. He has a special interest in providing the least invasive approach to manage the patient’s condition and has special training in minimally invasive spine surgical techniques, robotic spine surgery, and motion preservation.
Dr. Callaway attended both Oconee County and Athens Academy for high school. He graduated Magna Cum Laude from the University of Georgia. He then completed medical school at Mercer University School of Medicine in Macon, GA where he was a member of the Phi Beta Kappa and Alpha Omega Alpha honor societies. He moved to Augusta, GA for orthopedic surgery residency at the Medical College of Georgia. Following residency, he continued his spine surgery training as a fellow at OrthoCarolina in Charlotte, NC.
Academically, Dr. Callaway has published numerous peer-reviewed scientific research articles and he presents his research at both local and national meetings. He is a member of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS), North American Spine Society (NASS), AOSpine North America, and Georgia Orthopaedic Society (GOS).
He is excited to return to his hometown of Athens, GA with his wife, Alden and three children: Beau, Lake, and Collins.

My appointments are usually short and involve receiving shots for pain, primarily triggered by scoliosis, twisting, etc. Dr. Callaway is very skilled in getting just the right spot that can relieve me as some significant nerve pain. He’s very knowledgeable, pleasant, and I appreciate being one of his patients.
From the moment I met him…I knew I had the right doctor to help me get through my L4-L5 herniated disc injury. Very easy to talk to and listened well. He made things happen for me.

Dr Callaway did my 2nd cervical spine surgery.i was having pain in both shoulders and arms. I had very little feeling in fingers. I met Dr Callaway on my first visit. He told me he could help my symptoms by doing surgery. But before I could have surgery. I was going to lower my A1C and to have a endoscopy done to make sure that I could have surgery since I already had one cervical surgery. I was able to meet his requirements. His office done all the scheduling and insurance claims for me. Dr Callaway did my surgery and all of my expectations were met. Now my quality of life has improved so much. I have feeling back in both hands and fingers. With very little pain. It has been 36 days since surgery. I’m so thankful for choosing Dr Callaway. I was a patient of Dr William Ashford already. I believe that they are great doctors. I was much more satisfied with Dr Callaway than the previous surgeon.
