Dr. Mortensen was born and raised in Salt Lake City, Utah. He then lived in Antofagasta, Chile for two years serving a church mission, becoming fluent in Spanish. He attended Brigham Young University and University of Utah for his undergraduate studies. He then went to both medical school and business school at Texas Tech University graduating with an MD and MBA, being inducted to Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society, and graduating summa cum laude.
He left the heat of the Lone Star state for the cornfields of the Midwest, completing his internship and residency training at the University of Iowa. There, his extracurricular passions were focused on community outreach as ophthalmology leader of the Iowa City Free Medical Clinic (FMC) starting Operation HawkEyeSight, a new program providing free cataract surgery for the uninsured FMC patients. He was awarded an American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery Resident Excellence national award in 2022.
Dr. Mortensen married his high school sweetheart, Alicia, and together they have 3 children: daughters Jade (6) and Romy (4), and son Nash (18 months). He enjoys volunteering in his church, athletics, mountain biking, spending time with his family, and the outdoors--including learning how to hunt from fellow Iowa graduate and Eye Associates colleague, Dr. Quist.
Knowledgeable and caring; Dr. Mortensen is courteous and reassuringly competent. I believe I am getting the best possible treatment available.
Dr. Mortensen has a gift. I did not have vision out of my left eye for 20 years due to NAION and then finally cataracts. He restored my vision from 20/400 to 20/40. I can now see faces and I can drive. As I compare him to other eye specialists, he has knowledge way beyond his years. He is an extremely caring person and wants the best for his patients. I am very grateful for this gifted doctor.
