Dr. Sutton completed his residency in orthopedic surgery at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston, South Carolina. He then finished his surgical training with a fellowship in sports medicine and arthroscopic surgery at the Hughston Sports Medicine Clinic in Georgia. He holds a Certificate of Added Qualifications in Sports Medicine. Dr. Sutton is one of the founding partners of EmergeOrtho.
Dr. Sutton’s particular interests are in arthroscopic and open shoulder surgery/reconstruction, knee reconstruction/replacement, hand surgery, foot and ankle procedures, orthobiologic treatments using stem cells and platelets (including platelet rich plasma injection therapy, bone marrow and fat cells) for the treatment of many osteoarthritis conditions and tendinitis conditions.
For twenty-five years, Dr. Sutton served as Head Team Physician for the University of North Carolina at Wilmington, where he is an adjunct professor in the Department of Health and Physical Education. He has also served as Director of Sports Medicine for the NCAA Women’s Golf Championship, Women’s Davis Cup Tennis Championship and the Wilmington Hammerhead Professional Soccer Team. He is Clinical Professor of Surgery for the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
Dr. Sutton is part of the global Medical Missions International (MMI) team, an organization dedicated to helping to provide compassionate healthcare to people in need worldwide. He has donated his time and skills in orthopedic surgery by participating in eight trips to the Dominican Republic and has taken domestic and international medical mission trips to Haiti, Ecuador and Kenya.
In his spare time, Dr. Sutton enjoys golfing, water sports, history and spending time with his family.
