Dr. William K. Oelsner, Jr. was raised in Charleston, South Carolina, and graduated with honors from Wake Forest University with a Bachelor’s of Science in Biology. He earned his medical degree from the Medical University of South Carolina. During medical school, he completed a prestigious National Institute of Health (NIH) funded T32 Research Fellowship at Vanderbilt University, studying translational wound healing. He completed a general surgery internship, internal medicine residency, and gastroenterology fellowship at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center at Chattanooga. Dr. Oelsner was selected as Chief Fellow during training.
Throughout his medical education and training, Dr. Oelsner was consistently recognized for his dedication to compassionate care, humanistic medicine, and patient advocacy. He was inducted into the Gold Humanism Honor Society during medical school and was recognized as an Alper Humanitarian Award honoree during fellowship.
Dr. Oelsner is passionate about the impact of food on our health. His research is focused on the influence of diet and healthcare disparities on early-onset colorectal and pancreatic cancers. His work has received national recognition, including the American College of Gastroenterology’s Outstanding Research Award and selection for a Presidential Oral Presentation at the 2023 American College of Gastroenterology Annual Meeting in Vancouver.
He treats a broad range of gastrointestinal and liver conditions including colorectal cancer screening and prevention, inflammatory bowel disease, acid reflux, trouble swallowing, Barrett’s esophagus, eosinophilic esophagitis, GI Bleeding, celiac disease, chronic liver disease, hepatitis, cirrhosis, small bowel bacterial overgrowth (SIBO), chronic diarrhea, and chronic constipation. He is a member of the American College of Gastroenterology and the American Medical Society.
Dr. Oelsner joined Birmingham Gastroenterology Associates in August 2025. He and his wife, Dr. Kathryn Tully Oelsner—a Birmingham native and pediatrician—met at Wake Forest and trained together through medical school and residency. Now settled in Birmingham with their three young children, they enjoy hiking, traveling, and spending time outdoors as a family.
