Dr. Steven Kalisch has worked in the field of pain psychology for over 35 years as a clinician, educator, and researcher and is a clinical psychologist specializing in pain psychology. After completing his clinical internship and post-doctoral training at Scripps Memorial Hospital in La Jolla, California, Dr. Kalisch went on to hold Academic Medical Center positions as Director of Behavioral Medicine Services at the Spine Institute of New England and Department of Orthopaedics at University of Vermont Medical Center and afterward as Director of Northwestern Memorial Hospital's Back and Neck Institute in Chicago.
The presence of chronic pain can affect all aspects of a person's life. The "biopsychosocial" challenges posed by chronic pain can result in an intractable sense of both physical and personal suffering that can leave patients feeling overwhelmed and unable to cope.
