Ionna earned his B.S. at the University of Kentucky (1975-79), conducted graduate research in endocrinology at the University of Cincinnati (1979-81), and received his medical degree from the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine (1981-85). He completed his internal medicine internship and residency at The Good Samaritan Hospital in Cincinnati (1985-88) and then a gastroenterology fellowship at Presbyterian University of Pennsylvania Medical Center in Philadelphia (1988-90). Board-certified in internal medicine (1988) and gastroenterology (1991), he has been in private practice with Cincinnati GI since 1990.
