Dr. Somphanh Khousakoun, D.O., is a board-certified neurologist with a powerful personal story and a relentless commitment to advancing brain health. Born in Laos and raised in Rhode Island after arriving in the U.S. as a child refugee, he served in the U.S. Marine Corps, including a combat deployment during Operation Iraqi Freedom.
He earned his bachelor’s degree in philosophy and pre-medical studies from the University of Massachusetts Lowell and his medical degree from the University of New England College of Osteopathic Medicine. He completed residency training in Internal Medicine and Neurology at the University of Florida College of Medicine in Jacksonville.
Dr. Khousakoun’s clinical and research expertise centers on cognitive decline and Alzheimer’s disease. He has also contributed to research in stroke-related brain injury, but now focuses entirely on neurodegenerative disease and memory disorders. Prior to founding Tampa Bay Neurocognitive Institute, he served as Medical Director of a local memory clinic, where he led efforts to improve access to high-quality dementia care.
Outside of medicine, Dr. Khousakoun is the co-founder of the Lao American Student Foundation (LASF), a nonprofit organization that empowers Lao American youth through scholarships, mentorship, and leadership development. His commitment to both his patients and his community reflects his core values of integrity, perseverance, and service.
