He performs over 400 joint replacement procedures each year in addition to many knee arthroscopies. He is actively involved in clinical research, has published numerous articles in peer-reviewed journals, and has given national and international lectures on joint replacement topics and advanced orthopedic techniques.
Dr. Toomey focuses his practice on minimally invasive hip and knee replacement surgery. This includes tissue sparing Direct Anterior approach for total hips and robotic-arm assisted techniques for total knee, partial knee, and direct anterior hip replacement surgery.
He performed the first robotic-assisted orthopedic knee replacement in Seattle in 2010 and has performed several hundreds since that time. Robotic-arm assisted surgery is the most precise joint replacement technology available today, and he is one of the most experienced robotic-arm assisted orthopedic surgeons in the greater Seattle and Puget Sound region, having performed over 500 partial knee, total knee and total hip replacements using this advanced technology. Dr. Toomey is committed to using the best techniques available for patients today while actively researching improved surgical options for patients in the future.
Dr. Toomey became interested in orthopedic surgery as he grew up watching his father, Dr. Hugh (Pete) Toomey, also a joint replacement specialist, interact with patients. Dr. Toomey is an avid soccer player, and played collegiately for the University of Notre Dame. His interests include reading, skiing, cycling, travelling and photography.

Excellent surgeon, staff all Super Caring & nice. Had surgery on Mon 9.28, by Thurs 9.24, pre-op meds hadn’t been prescribed yet. I had sent Patient portal messages & voicemails about this earlier in the week, didn’t get a call back til Fri 9.25 PM. Peter Peng, PA kindly RX’d meds then. Though I’d reached out multiple times, it wound up Costco having meds ready after 4PM, & at least 20 folks were in the pharmacy line, didn’t get home til 7:45PM. This was Super Stressful, Completely Preventable. ALSO, I reached out to MD office 2x in Aug, ( a phone call & Patient Portal mssg) to advise that my secondary ins (Aetna) terminated after I retired on 8.27.26. When I checked in for 9.28 surgery, they had NO RECORD of this, had to call their Business office about it, & I had to Re-do one of the pages of paperwork. The phone conversation w Business office sounded like my surgery could have been Canceled b/c of this error; Super Stressful, completely avoidable!
I wish I had more joints to replace with Toomey and his robot surgical assistant!
He and his staff are so attentive and no nonsense. I felt heard and can’t say enough good about Dr Toomey!
