Dr. Samuel J Laurencin, M.D., Ph.D, is an orthopaedic surgeon specializing in minimally invasive hip and knee replacement surgery, partial joint replacement and complex revision surgery. As part of NOSS’ multispecialty team of providers, Dr. Laurencin also provides orthopedic trauma and general orthopedic care for the greater Waterbury, CT region. His approach to medicine involves a patient-centered treatment plan with the goal of prompt return to function.
Dr. Laurencin earned a B.S. in Chemical Engineering at Drexel University where he was an American Chemical Society scholar. He remained at Drexel for completion of a M.S. in Chemical Engineering as a National Science Foundation fellow gaining advanced understanding of osteoarthritis and its surgical and non-surgical treatment options. Dr. Laurencin is a graduate of Drexel University’s College of Medicine earning his M.D. while simultaneously completing a Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering focusing on advanced biomaterials and regenerative medicine for orthopedic applications. His research has led to the development of cutting-edge, patient-specific orthopedic implants and he has presented his work both nationally and internationally. His current research interests include applications of machine learning (artificial intelligence) in orthopedics and the development of the next generation of intraoperative aids including robotic surgery and augmented reality.
Dr. Laurencin completed his orthopedic surgery residency at the University of Connecticut Health Center, serving as chief resident during his final year of training. Dr. Laurencin then completed an adult reconstruction fellowship through Harvard University, with appointment as assistant in orthopedic surgery at Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH). The Harvard-MGH adult reconstruction fellowship is the oldest continuous arthroplasty training program in the United States. As a fellow, he received extensive training in hip and knee replacement surgery including each of the primary approaches to the hip (anterior, posterior and lateral) and the use of robotics in joint replacement.
Outside of medicine, Samuel is passionate about servant leadership and community outreach. He has remained involved in various youth mentorship programs and has been a recurrent invited motivational speaker with a particular focus on underserved communities.
