Dr. Roy Carls, M.D., trained at UCLA as a scholarship track and field decathlete, going on to earn a BS in kinesiology pre-med. He serves as Precision’s Chief of Orthopedics.
Dr. Carls joined Navy and earned an MD degree at USUHS Bethesda, MD. After his Portsmouth Naval Hospital surgical internship, he became a Naval flight surgeon and was stationed with the Marines at Cherry Point, NC. He completed his orthopedic surgery residency at National Naval Medical Center in Bethesda, MD, and his foot and ankle fellowship at Union Memorial Hospital, Baltimore, MD with Drs. Mark Myerson and Lew Schon.
After fellowship, he was an attending orthopedic surgeon at NNMC teaching hospital in Bethesda, and then his last duty station in the Navy was as a team orthopedic surgeon, stationed at the Naval Academy in Annapolis, MD.
After his Naval career, he was in private practice in Westminster, MD, and Cumberland, MD, from 2004-2019. He joined Precision Orthopedics and Sports Medicine in June 2019. He specializes in arthroscopic reconstruction of the shoulder, knee, foot and ankle, total knee and shoulder replacements, and complex reconstruction of the foot and ankle.
