Growing up in central Pennsylvania, Dr. Robert Wertz knew that he wanted to be a doctor at an early age while listening to his father, who is a general surgeon, talk about his work and accompanying him on rounds at the hospital. It wasn’t until medical school, however, that Dr. Wertz became interested in pain management after seeing how patients’ lives were transformed by alleviating them of the burden of chronic pain.
Dr. Wertz moved to the Lehigh Valley in 1996 after completing his residency in Anesthesiology at the Pennsylvania State University and a fellowship in Pain Management at the University of Virginia School of Medicine. While a medical student at Hershey Medical Center, Dr. Wertz developed an interest in clinical research and won the prestigious Howard E. Morgan award for basic science research. In his practice since coming to the Lehigh Valley, he has participated in numerous clinical trials of novel pain therapies as either a principle or sub-investigator. His interest in current research brings cutting-edge treatments to the patients for whom he cares.

Dr. Wertz is extremely thorough and knowledgeable. He truly cares about his patients and takes the time to listen. Even with his busy schedule you are not rushed through.
Very through and proactive. He is keeping this 84yr old Vet out in the field, not an easy task for one with multiple joint replacements and a fused back.
Dr. Wertz is the best.
