Education and Expertise
With an undergraduate degree from Miami University in Oxford, OH, Dr. Schaefer received a Master of Science degree in Physiology from Wright State University in Dayton, OH. He then graduated from Wright State University School of Medicine in Dayton, OH, with a Doctor of Medicine degree. Following this, he completed a transitional residency at Mount Carmel Medical Center, Columbus, OH, and his orthopaedic surgery residency at the University of Missouri-Kansas City’s Truman Medical Center, Kansas City, MO. Dr. Shaefer also completed a sports medicine fellowship with the Cincinnati Sportsmedicine and Orthopaedic Center in Cincinnati, OH.
Dr. Schaefer is board-certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery and the National Board of Medical Examiners. He joins the EmergeOrtho—Blue Ridge Region General Orthopedics team after practicing orthopedics in Michigan, Ohio, and Illinois.

Best doctor I ever have had!
Dr Schaefer is absolutely tops in my book. He is not only an amazing surgeon but a remarkable human being. The care he shows his patients is above anything I’ve seen before. He replaced both of my knees, two years apart. Severe osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis had limited me too long. Although he is moving his practice to SC, I will always be grateful to Dr. Schaefer for helping me gain a new lease on life.
