Injuries in high school brought Dr. Robert Heaps to an orthopedic surgeon – the only doctor he really knew at the time. He appreciated what his doctor did for him and kept that experience in mind as he considered his career.
Dr. Heaps feels that as a orthopedic surgeon, it is really important to understand what his patients are going through.
“I remind myself that this is routine for us as surgeons, but it’s not routine for my patients. I try to check in with them so I consider what they are going through.”
Dr. Heaps enjoys the challenge of both common surgeries like carpal tunnel and trigger finger as well as the more complex surgeries to treat severe injuries.
“The nice thing about hand surgery is we see a wide variety of injuries and have many different treatments. So we’re not just doing one or two operations. There’s multiple operations in different parts of the hand, wrist and elbow.”
He also appreciates that more non-surgical treatments are becoming available.
“We’re now able to treat conditions like tennis elbow with platelet rich plasma, which is a patient’s blood product that we re-inject to stimulates the healing process.” Conditions like Dupuytren’s Contracture can also be treated with surgery or non-surgical procedures like injection of an enzyme known by the brandname Xiaflex.
Dr. Heaps takes pride in staying up to date with the changes in medicine and applying them to his patients every day.

He completed his Fellowship in Hand and Microvascular Surgery at Duke University Medical Center, Durham, North Carolina.
