Dr. Richard Owens is a board-certified, fellowship-trained orthopedic surgeon specializing in foot and ankle surgery. He graduated from Virginia Tech with a degree in Mechanical Engineering and served eight years as an officer in the US Air Force. He then attended medical school and orthopedic surgical residency at the University of Cincinnati. He received subspecialty training in foot and ankle under Dr. Steven Conti in Pittsburgh, PA.
Dr. Owens and his family fell in love with the Rogue Valley during a job search and relocated from the Midwest. He was recruited by Southern Oregon Orthopedics in 2010 to fill a pressing need for high-quality foot and ankle care. His professional interests include sports injuries, total ankle joint replacement, deformity correction and lower extremity trauma.
"I was interested in small-town life, the outdoor activities, and the opportunity to practice big city medicine without the drawbacks of city life. Southern Oregon Orthopedics, with its sub-specialty focus, offers that opportunity."
In addition to his clinical practice, dr. Owens enjoys running, golf, wine-tasting, and family life. He is active in his church and enjoys twice-yearly medical mission trips to Honduras as well as a yearly shoe ministry at Medford Gospel Mission.

Professional and thorough
Dr. Owens’s was very professional and thorough and kind, and very informative with easy to understand information! I was completely satisfied with my experience!
First visit. Personable, knowledgable, professional & produced a plan to help solve the pain in my ankle and heel. I felt he might have gotten some bad news the day of my appointment, as he appeared subdued and somewhat reflective. Even doctors have personal lives that do affect them. However, it could be I assigned a wrong interpretation of his nonverbal affect & one verbal statement on my part as I didn’t think it appropriate to question his affect and statement that seemed a bit ‘off’ to me. I’ve been in a lot of pain & do not want to give a negative mark to any person based on one meeting. Just an observation of my first impressions. I’m definitely following up with his recommendations and another visit to further the game plan. The many positive reviews for this physician give me confidence that he will treat & fix my condition so that I will again enjoy walking and being in better health.
Oh My …. My! My He had been the best PHYSICIAN I have encountered so far! I am 73 years old; he’s amazing! Praise the Lord for those who God has raised to help humanity as Dr Owens! Amen! He has help me through 8 weeks of; a serve physical issue; Not walking! I will always THANK My heavenly Father for him everyday God asks me to pray for his other surgeries while at Asante! He is a true anointed professional! Asante is blessed to have Him there! Thank you so very much for the care so received while with Asante! My leg is healed with his expertise surgery!
