He completed his undergraduate studies at Morehead State University in 1991 and received his Doctor of Optometry degree from Indiana University School of Optometry in 1995. He completed fellowships at Commonwealth Eye Surgery, Lexington, Kentucky, and at Bascom Palmer Eye Institute, Miami, Florida.
