Dr. Philip Maddox is board-certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery and specializes in treatments of the Hand, Wrist, Elbow, knee, and shoulder.
Since joining his fellow physicians at TOC in 1986, Dr. Philip Maddox’s practice has centered primarily around surgery of the hand, wrist and elbow combined with emphasis on sports medicine. This has resulted in a practice that concentrates on the problems of the upper extremity (shoulder to fingertips) including those caused by trauma, arthritis, vascular disease, neurological disease or birth defects. Practical examples include treatment of cartilage and ligament injuries of the hand, wrist, and elbow; carpal tunnel syndrome, degenerative arthritis, fractures and tendon lacerations. As many of the injuries seen in Worker’s Compensation and sports involve the upper extremity, he has been active in both arenas and has developed a clear understanding of the needs of patients, employers, and athletes to return to the normal work routine and competitive environments.
Emphasis on sports has led Dr. Maddox to becoming team physician to area high schools as well as a consultant for the Tennessee Valley Vipers, the Huntsville Havoc and Alabama A & M. Treating these high demand patients has intensified and sharpened his understanding of the problems and treatment of the upper extremity and allowed him to provide better care of all his patients.
Teaching and sharing of his expertise and experience has always been an important part of his practice. Dr. Maddox routinely presents lectures and instructional courses both locally and regionally as well as teaches medical students, residents, and patient groups. He has always felt that better medical education of all involved leads to optimal recovery.
“Not only do I have a fascination with the scientific and technological aspects of orthopedic medicine, I am also grateful for the fulfillment of the purpose and the reward of helping others. There is nothing like being able to help someone get back to life as usual, when dysfunction has prevented them from doing the things they love”. Dr. Philip A. Maddox.

Very knowledgeable and caring. He took the time with me to well explain the injury and its treatment. I went to him because he was also great with my son
Professional, knowledgeable, personable. Informative and complete surgery previsit.
Friendly and attentive he obtained X-ray examined, discussed treatment and treated. No issues would see again and recommend.
Very professional.
Helpful, informative, and to the point:) helping me get my mobility back - very appreciated
Never a long wait. Answered all my questions with knowledgeable confidence.
Well I've only seen him 3 or 4 times. He seems to know what he's talking about. But I won't know until after a surgery.
Absolutely one of the best. Very observant and thorough.
Very nice! He did excellent job on my surgery.
Dr. Maddox is an excellent doctor. He listen to your problem and gave you an honest answer. Dr. Maddox did surgery on my thumb 3 years ago and it's better now than before. I had an appointment and end up coming really early because I put the wrong time on my calendar but he took me anyway. This is what you call going out of your way for your patience
