Dr. Kelvin McDaniel, D.O., is a a board-certified ophthalmologist and osteopathic physician.

Dr. McDaniel brings a unique blend of skill, innovation, and compassion to his practice at Southern Eye Group. Known for his exceptional surgical precision and dedication to patient-centered care, Dr. McDaniel offers a comprehensive range of eye care services, from managing complex ocular conditions to pioneering leading-edge surgical techniques. With over 10,000 surgeries performed, he has extensive experience across a variety of procedures that help patients protect and restore their vision.

Dr. McDaniel specializes in vision preservation, cataract surgery, and glaucoma care. He is highly skilled in routine and complex cataract surgery using specialty lenses to reduce dependence on glasses, as well as refractive surgery, astigmatism correction, and Light Adjustable Lens™ (LAL) technology. With extensive experience in Minimally Invasive Glaucoma Surgery (MIGS), he has performed thousands of procedures utilizing cutting-edge techniques to lower eye pressure and protect sight. MIGS offers a safer, less invasive treatment option for mild to moderate glaucoma, providing faster recovery times and excellent outcomes. Dr. McDaniel and his team are dedicated to delivering personalized care to help patients preserve their vision and enhance their quality of life.

A native of Covington, Louisiana, Dr. McDaniel graduated cum laude from Tulane University and earned his medical degree with honors from A.T. Still University, the founding institution of osteopathic medicine. He completed his residency at Saint Louis University, where he set a program record for the most cataract surgeries performed in its century-long history. During his residency, Dr. McDaniel introduced MIGS and became the first physician at the university to implant a micro stent for glaucoma. His pioneering contributions also included incorporating advanced technologies like 3D heads-up surgery into clinical practice in South Alabama.

Dr. McDaniel continues to lead the way in ophthalmic innovation, being the first surgeon on Mobile’s eastern shore to offer the Light Adjustable Lens™ (LAL). This cutting-edge technology allows for post-surgical vision fine-tuning, enabling more precise outcomes for cataract surgery patients. His dedication to adopting groundbreaking techniques reflects his commitment to delivering superior results and enhancing the patient experience.

In addition to his clinical practice, Dr. McDaniel has an impressive background in teaching and research. He has authored numerous peer-reviewed publications and book chapters and was awarded the prestigious Saint Louis University Harry Brady Resident Research Award for developing a novel surgical approach for advanced glaucoma treatment. Dr. McDaniel enjoys spending quality time with his wife, Kylie, and their family. Together, they enjoy outdoor adventures, traveling, golfing, swimming, and cooking.
