Dr. Patrick Walsh, M.D., is a primary care sports medicine physician who joins Downeast Orthopedics after seven years of practice in northeast North Dakota. A Michigan native, his path to medicine began before medical school even started, when he served as an Army medic while working on his undergraduate degree. That early experience caring for others under pressure stayed with him as he went on to earn his medical degree at Michigan State University, complete his residency at Saint Joseph Health System in South Bend, Indiana, and finish the South Bend – Notre Dame Sports Medicine Fellowship, training that shaped his focus on getting patients back to the activities they love, safely and efficiently. He has a particular interest in ultrasound, which allows him to diagnose and treat musculoskeletal injuries with precision while keeping care as minimally invasive as possible.
Dr. Walsh’s approach to medicine is rooted in listening closely to his patients and treating the whole person, not just the injury. Whether he’s working with a weekend warrior, a young athlete, or someone simply trying to stay active as they age, his goal is the same: to help people move through life with less pain and more confidence in their bodies. That philosophy, paired with years spent building long-term relationships with patients in a close-knit community, is something he’s looking forward to bringing to Bangor.
Outside the clinic, Dr. Walsh tries to stay just as active as he encourages his patients to be. An avid cyclist and runner, he’s always looking for a new road or trail to explore. He’s a genuine, all-around sports fan, equally at home watching a game as he is playing one. He and his wife have three kids who share his love of being active and playing sports, particularly winter sports. The family is looking forward to Maine winters that are better suited to getting outside and enjoying them, especially pond hockey. Beyond the change in scenery, Dr. Walsh is excited for the chance to raise his family somewhere that blends small-town warmth with easy access to the outdoors, and to bring his experience in primary care sports medicine to the Bangor community so patients of all ages can stay active for the long run.
