Dr. Patrick Higgins has been a practicing vitreous-retinal surgeon specializing in medical and surgical disease in northern New Jersey for the past 18 years and was the founder of the Retina Center of New Jersey with offices in Bloomfield, North Bergen, Ramsey, Teaneck and Union, NJ. Dr. Higgins is fluent in both English and Spanish and looks forward to serving the needs of his patients.
Dr. Higgins has extensive experience in clinical research as well. He has participated in over sixty clinical trials dating back to 1998, which included working on clinical trials for many of the pharmaceuticals that are currently being used as standard of care in the retina/ophthalmology field today.
Dr. Higgins was the only retina specialist in the state of New Jersey to be selected by his peers to be included in New Jersey Monthly magazines “NJ’s Top Doctors 2012”.
Dr. Higgins is double-fellowship trained. He completed a one-year medical retina fellowship in New York City at New York University. He then completed a second surgical retina fellowship in New Orleans, Louisiana at the Touro Eye Infirmary.
Dr. Higgins attended medical school at University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey (UMDNJ) in Newark, NJ. He subsequently completed an internship at St. Barnabas Medical Center in Livingston, NJ and then returned to UMDNJ where he completed his Ophthalmology residency at the New Jersey Eye Institute.
Dr. Higgins attended the University of Scranton as a pre-med major and graduated Cum Laude with a B.S. in Biology. He was selected to the AOE National Honor Society and also played varsity baseball for the University of Scranton for three years.
He was born and raised in Nutley, NJ where he resided with his family for 33 years. He now resides in Ridgewood, NJ with his four children and parents.

Extremely long wait about 2 1/2 hours
Dr. Higgins is a wonderful doctor. He was patient with me and extremely understanding. He worked efficiently and quickly to resolve my issue. He explained everything so that I understood what was happening. .
Dr Higgins explained everything and answered all of my questions. The injection was so quick and painless that I didn’t realize it was done.

I always feel confident that Dr Higgins is an expert in the field of retinal disease. He demonstrates compassion and concern for my eye health and takes the time to explain and answer any questions. I highly recommend him.
