He completed a two-year surgical vitreoretinal fellowship at the University of Kentucky in Lexington.

Dr. Gupta grew up in Smithfield, NC where he graduated from Smithfield-Selma High School. He earned his bachelor in science in Biology from Duke University. He later attended both North Carolina State University and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill where he earned masters degrees in physiology and public health respectively. He graduated from the Brody School of Medicine at East Carolina and completed his residency in ophthalmology at the Medical College of Georgia.
Dr. Gupta is married and has three children. He and his family live in Raleigh and enjoy sports, the outdoors, and traveling.
