In 2018 I opted for a Cartiva implant as a fusion alternative. Nick Seibert did the work. Nick is a capable, conscientious, HONEST, friendly, skilled and down-to-earth surgeon. No hiding the ball. Unfortunately, my cartiva implant failed. Nick did a revision in 2021. The reason cited for failure x2 was "subsidence" - the implant sinking into the bone tunnel it is planted in, so it no longer cushions between bones. DO NOT get Cartiva!! It was fast tracked by the FDA based on European studies - a regulatory mistake I have paid for with 5 years of PAIN, limited mobility, altered gait. Dr seibert recently removed it and did a standard fusion with a small metal plate. 3 surgeries in, I am praying fusion takes because I have been unable to do the vigorous exercise I am accustomed to- hiking, skating, lifting weights, for too long and I'm sick of the pain. He says the Cartiva had subsided a second time and there was inflammation and fluid in the joint, bone on bone!!

Dr. Seibert was very helpful, clearly explaining the situation and what options exist as well as concerns or potential drawbacks of each.
