Nicholas Carbo, M.D.

Born and raised in Savannah, Georgia, Dr. Nicholas Carbo, M.D., earned his undergraduate degree at the University of Georgia. Medical school at Mercer University School of Medicine followed, as did his internal medicine residency at Memorial Health University Medical Center in Savannah, where he served as chief resident.

As an internist and primary care physician, Dr. Carbo says he appreciates treating a broad spectrum of diseases and enjoys the versatility. This calls for staying abreast of the latest breakthroughs in medicine and utilizing a variety of resources to reinforce and expand his knowledge.

“Treating a wide spectrum of diseases requires continued education and always being aware that you can’t know everything all the time,” he explains. “You need to be willing to take that extra step and study for your patients, look up things, consult mentors, and make sure you're providing the best care possible. You’ve got to be ready for anything when you walk into a patient’s room.”

Building relationships with patients continues to be one of the most rewarding and important aspects of his job. While fostering that connection, his goal is to be their trusted advocate. “I just enjoy people,” he says. “They can really tell when you are listening, and being a good primary care physician requires you to be an excellent listener. You can see the joy and appreciation that people have when they can tell that you genuinely care, and you're genuinely wanting to do what is best for them.”

For Dr. Carbo, connecting with patients also means educating and empowering them to be active participants in managing their health. He says collaborating with patients through clear and open communication helps with patient compliance, gives them a sense of involvement, and leads to better results.

“Working with a patient to get something like a chronic condition under control is really gratifying,” he says. “They’re seeing your hard work. And they can see that the work they're putting in through diet, exercise, taking their medications, and doing the things that you're instructing them to do at home are making a difference. It’s truly a team effort, and such a wonderful feeling to reap those rewards together.”

When he’s not seeing patients, Dr. Carbo finds great joy in being a husband and father. He often finds himself on the golf course, experiencing the amazing fishing Savannah has to offer, whipping up some of his favorite dishes in the kitchen, and cheering on the University of Georgia Bulldogs and the Atlanta Braves.
