Dr. Monica Arney, M.D., earned her medical degree at the Michigan State University College of Human Medicine, and completed her orthopaedic surgery residency at the University of Virginia. She provides thoughtful, individualized care to patients of all ages and activity levels, helping them recover from injury, regain confidence in their bodies, and return to the activities they enjoy.
Dr. Arney earned her Bachelor of Science in Human Physiology from Michigan State University through the Lyman Briggs College of Natural Science and Honors College, with a specialization in Bioethics, Humanities, and Society. She received the Department of Physiology Academic Excellence Award. She went on to earn her medical degree from the Michigan State University College of Human Medicine, where she was inducted into the Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Honor Society and received the Dean’s Endowed Scholarship in two consecutive years.
She completed her orthopaedic surgery residency at the University of Virginia, where she received the Junior Resident of the Year Award. Dr. Arney then pursued advanced fellowship training in orthopaedic sports medicine at the Steadman Philippon Research Institute and The Steadman Clinic in Vail, Colorado, widely regarded as one of the world’s premier centers for orthopaedic sports medicine. There, she trained under internationally recognized leaders Dr. Marc Philippon and Dr. Matthew Provencher, gaining advanced experience treating complex sports-related injuries and caring for athletes at every level, from recreational to elite and professional competitors.
Throughout her training, Dr. Arney has remained actively involved in orthopaedic research, with particular interests in ACL reconstruction, rotator cuff repair, postoperative rehabilitation, and improving patient outcomes. She has authored and contributed to numerous peer-reviewed publications and has presented her research at national and academic meetings. Her work has appeared in leading orthopaedic journals, including Arthroscopy and the Journal of Orthopaedics.
Dr. Arney also brings a personal understanding of the demands and rewards of athletics to her practice. A former Division I student-athlete at Michigan State University, she competed on the varsity women’s rowing team from 2010 to 2014. She was a full athletic scholarship recipient, served as team captain, and competed at the NCAA Division I Women’s Rowing National Championship. She received Michigan State University’s Student-Athlete President’s Award, given to the graduating student-athlete with the highest GPA in the athletic department, and was named a Big Ten Distinguished Scholar in each of her three varsity seasons.
Her experience caring for athletes extends beyond her own athletic background. Dr. Arney has served as a team physician for Monticello High School football, the United States Air Force football team, and the United States Olympic Ski and Snowboard Team.
Whether caring for a competitive athlete, a weekend warrior, or someone who simply wants to move more comfortably and stay active, Dr. Arney believes every patient deserves the same thoughtful attention and individualized approach. She combines advanced surgical expertise with compassionate, patient-centered care, taking the time to understand each patient’s goals and build a treatment plan that fits their life.
Outside of her clinical practice, Dr. Arney remains passionate about education, mentorship, and giving back to her community. She has participated in orthopaedic student outreach, mentoring, and suture workshops, and continues those efforts in the Raleigh community.
