Michael J. Patetta, MD

Dr. Michael J. Patetta, M.D., is a fellowship-trained spine surgeon who joined EmergeOrtho–Coastal Region in 2026. He completed his Spine Surgery Fellowship at Duke University, where he trained alongside both orthopedic and neurosurgical spine specialists. Dr. Patetta completed his orthopaedic surgery residency and a research fellowship at the University of Illinois – Chicago. He earned his Doctor of Medicine from the University of South Carolina after previously studying bioengineering at Clemson University.

Dr. Patetta specializes in the comprehensive treatment of disorders of the cervical, thoracic, and lumbar spine. He believes that when surgery is necessary, the goal should be to achieve the desired outcome while minimizing disruption to the patient’s normal anatomy and function. His approach incorporates motion-preserving procedures, endoscopic surgery, minimally invasive spine surgery, and complex reconstructive techniques when appropriate for the patient’s condition.

Dr. Patetta is actively involved in research and innovation in spine surgery. He has authored numerous peer-reviewed publications and presented research at national medical conferences. His academic work has focused on improving the safety, effectiveness, and outcomes of spine surgery, as well as developing and evaluating new surgical techniques and technologies.

Dr. Patetta believes that successful spine care begins with understanding each patient’s individual goals and concerns. He prioritizes educating patients about their condition and working together to develop a treatment plan that aligns with their symptoms, lifestyle, and goals—whether that means continued nonoperative care or surgery when it is required.

Outside of his clinical and academic work, Dr. Patetta enjoys spending time with his family, walking his dog, and golfing.
