Dr. Michael McKelvey, M.D., grew up in a small Appalachian river town in southeast Ohio. His parents, both teachers, helped instill in him strong small-town values: the importance of family, the value of education, and the dedication to care for one another. Medicine called to him early, driven by a desire to make a difference in people's lives alongside a deep passion for science and technology—a path he never strayed from.
After graduating high school as valedictorian, Dr. McKelvey attended Miami University for his undergraduate degree in microbiology, graduating Summa Cum Laude in 1998. That foundational knowledge in molecular biology, genetics, physiology, and the epidemiology of infectious diseases proved invaluable years later while navigating the COVID-19 pandemic.
He went on to attend medical school at The Ohio State University College of Medicine. Working alongside like-minded peers and brilliant educators while gaining first-hand experience across various specialties helped focus his sights on dermatology. He fell in love with the field's unique variety—where basic science and physiology meet microscopic histology, all while remaining deeply people-focused. For Dr. McKelvey, treating patients from newborns to the elderly and building strong doctor-patient relationships remains vital to providing optimum care. Additionally, the hands-on aspect of dermatology—from surgical excisions to laser therapies—continues to be one of the most challenging and rewarding parts of his practice.
After graduating medical school with Cum Laude honors and induction into the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society in 2002, Dr. McKelvey completed a one-year general internship at Riverside Methodist Hospital. He then completed his dermatology residency at The Ohio State University Medical Center, earning board certification in Dermatology in 2006.
Northeast Dermatology has been his professional home ever since graduation, and he takes immense pride in the practice he has helped build and grow. He also spent 15 years at the VA Medical Center as an assistant clinical professor for OSU dermatology residents. His love for teaching continues, and it is not unusual to find him in the clinic hallways discussing cases with a resident or medical student.
Humbled by the trust his patients place in him, Dr. McKelvey remains deeply committed to the empathy required to maintain that trust. His lifelong passion is clinical medicine: making a real difference in his patients’ quality of life through preventative, medical, and surgical interventions. The cosmetic procedures he offers are time-tested and deliver predictable, worthwhile results. Patients can count on Dr. McKelvey and his team to provide cutting-edge, high-value care free of fads and hype.

Very thorough and kind. He takes time to answer all questions and takes care of any concerns, most of the time the same day.
Great patient care
Dr. McKelvey is fine. However, it’s ridiculous and not customer-friendly that his office process doesn’t allow a client to make their next appointment before leaving the office. Instead, it’s necessary to go through a laborious process months later to set up the next appointment. There’s no reason other than an unwillingness to change their systems that this cannot be done. My dentist can do it. My primary health physician can do it. My neurologist can do it. Why not Northeast Dermatology as well?
