I found him to be very knowledgeable and patient. I had many questions regarding a hip replacement. I came in convinced that I wasn’t going to get it done. He explained my options and the expected outcomes. I actually decided to get it done after our conversation. I totally trust him to perform my hip replacement.

Dr Higgins is an excellent surgeon and doctor. I described my pain and he was able to immediately locate the problem. He is honest and does not over promise. I would use him again

I’ve been with Dr Higgins for 15 years and two knee replacements. He has always been the ultimate professional and skilled surgeon. Very personal and thorough in explaining my condition, plan and recovery process. That’s my guy and I’ve made many referrals to him.

I was dissatisfied with the care and evaluation I received during this visit. Throughout the entire appointment, the physician remained standing near the exam room door and did not conduct a physical examination of my affected area.
Additionally, the physician did not review or explain the findings of my X-ray with me. I was not provided with a clear explanation of what the imaging showed, what it ruled out, or whether there were any findings that could account for the pain I was experiencing.
The discussion was largely driven by questions that I initiated. Rather than receiving a thorough evaluation and explanation, I was left with the impression that my concerns were not being fully investigated. The only explanation offered for my pain was “bursitis,” without a clear discussion of how that diagnosis was reached or whether other potential causes had
been considered.

Dr. Michael E. Higgins, M.D., born and raised in Buffalo, New York, joined Tidewater Orthopaedics in Hampton, VA in 2006 and is a board-certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery and fellowship-trained by the American Acaedemy of Orthopaedic Surgeons in hip and knee replacement specialist. He believes practicing orthopaedic surgery and serving his patients is a privilege, a philosophy he learned from his mentors throughout his orthopaedic training.
Dr. Higgins began his training at The State University of New York at Geneseo, where he earned his undergraduate degree before continuing on to medical school at the State University of New York Upstate Medical University in Syracuse. After receiving his medical degree, Dr. Higgins completed his orthopaedic surgery residency at Buffalo University, The State University of New York, and an additional year of specialty training focused on complex hip and knee replacement at the Roanoke Orthopaedic Center in Roanoke, Virginia. The most rewarding aspects of his practice are fixing or reconstructing orthopaedic problems, whether simple or very complex, and restoring mobility in his patients so they can continue to live active and fulfilling lifestyles.
