Michael E. Ayers, M.D.

Dr. Michael Ayers, M.D., is dedicated to helping patients regain mobility and live pain-free through personalized care for conditions affecting the hip, knee, and shoulder, as well as general orthopedic concerns. He works closely with each patient to explore the most effective treatment options - both surgical and non-surgical - based on their individual needs. When appropriate, he offers joint replacement to help restore function and quality of life. As a board member of the Massachusetts Orthopedic Association, he contributes to advancing orthopedic care across the state.

Dr. Ayers earned his Medical Degree from the Boston University School of Medicine before completing his internship and residency in orthopedic surgery at the University of Massachusetts Medical Center in Worcester, MA. He further specialized his training by completing a dedicated Joint Replacement Fellowship at the Lahey Clinic in Burlington, MA. A highly respected leader in his field, Dr. Ayers has served as the Director of Joint Replacement Services at South Shore Hospital since 2012, as well as Director of the South Shore Health System Physician Hospital Organization since 2015.

A board-certified orthopedic surgeon by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery, Dr. Ayers holds active hospital affiliations at South Shore Hospital, New England Baptist Hospital, and the New England Baptist Surgery Center. He has been consistently recognized by his peers as a Castle Connolly Top Doctor since 2014 and has received distinguished honors including the Skip Costello Award and the Orthopedic Surgery Resident Research Award.

Beyond his clinical practice, Dr. Ayers is deeply involved in orthopedic leadership and research. He is a former President, Director, and current Board Member of the Massachusetts Orthopedic Association (MOA), as well as an active member of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS), the New England Orthopedic Society (NEOS), and the Boston Orthopedics Club. His research on joint arthroplasty outcomes, clinical pathways, and bone density has been featured in leading medical literature, including the Journal of Arthroplasty and major presentations at the AAOS.
