Dr. Matthew Thompson, M.D., is a board-certified orthopedic surgeon specializing in sports medicine, knee and shoulder surgery, as well as general orthopedics and fracture care.
He has served as an Assistant Team Physician for the New York Mets baseball team and provided team coverage for the Los Angeles Dodgers, and he serves as Head Team Physician for Frostburg State University. He has taught courses in sports medicine and shoulder surgery both locally and nationally and is Clinical Assistant Professor of Orthopedic Surgery at the University of Maryland School of Medicine.
At the University of Kansas, he graduated with honors in Chemical Engineering and participated on the Track & Field team. He completed medical school at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine and then completed his orthopedic surgery residency at George Washington University in Washington, DC. He then completed a fellowship in Sports Medicine and Shoulder Surgery at the top-ranked Hospital for Special Surgery in New York City.
In addition to treating sports injuries and general orthopedic issues in patients of all ages, he specializes in shoulder replacement and complex injuries of the shoulder, elbow, and knee. His research interests and publications include anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injuries in young athletes, shoulder dislocations, hip biomechanics, and athletic injuries, and baseball-specific orthopedic injuries. Dr. Thompson has also received Subspecialty Certification in Orthopaedic Sports Medicine by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery.
A native of Kansas, Dr. Thompson enjoys outdoor sports, running, hiking, travel, and spending time with his wife and daughter.

Dr. Thompson took the time to listen carefully, explain my mother’s treatment options, and methodically discuss the potential benefits and drawbacks of each approach. Even though the office was busy, he never made us feel rushed. His thoughtful, thorough manner and willingness to answer questions made a real difference. I also want to recognize the front-office staff. Everyone was kind, friendly, professional, and extremely helpful. They created a welcoming atmosphere and made the entire process much easier. I’ve also had a great experience with Dr. Daniel Perez at this practice, which speaks to the quality of the group as a whole. It’s clear that the doctors and staff genuinely care about their patients. I know people are often quick to post complaints, so I wanted to take a moment to give credit where it’s due. Precision Orthopedics is a caring, professional office, and I would gladly recommend Dr. Thompson for knee issues and Dr. Perez for anything foot related. A+ boys. 🙏

Doctor Thompson Review Doctor Thompson is a true professional and someone who really thinks outside the box. When I came to him with a complete tear of my rotator cuff, the pain was unbelievable, and I was extremely concerned about what I was facing. Dr. Thompson took excellent care of me, and I couldn’t be happier with the outcome. Once I received the proper treatment and care, I was feeling great again. I highly recommend Doctor Thompson to anyone looking for a knowledgeable, professional, and caring doctor. He truly cares about his patients and goes above and beyond to help them.
