Dr. Matthew Byington is a Board Certified Orthopaedic Surgeon with advanced fellowship training in Sports Medicine and Arthroscopic Surgery. He specializes in the non-operative and operative treatment of sports-related injuries as well as Knee, Shoulder and Elbow conditions. Dr. Byington treats all conditions of the Knee including acute and complex ligament injuries, cartilage damage, instability as well as chronic conditions such as arthritis. He has comprehensive training in meniscus repairs, ACL reconstruction, multi-ligament reconstruction, cartilage restoration, patella instability procedures, partial and total joint replacement, as well as revision surgery. Dr. Byington has developed an emphasis on Shoulder rotator cuff tears, labrum injuries, instability and arthritis. He has extensive experience ranging from minimally invasive arthroscopic repairs to fracture care to reverse and total shoulder replacement.
Dr. Byington earned his Medical Degree from Midwestern University in Chicago, IL and completed his Orthopaedic Surgery Residency at Michigan State University. He went on to complete fellowship training in Orthopaedic Surgery Sports Medicine and Arthroscopic Surgery at the world-renowned Orthopaedic Research of Virginia in Richmond, VA. While in his residency and fellowship, he participated in the care and treatment of student-athletes from the area high schools to the collegiate level, including Michigan State University Spartans and the University of Richmond Spiders.
Dr. Byington started practice in 2013 in Omaha and Fremont, where he served as the Medical Director of Sports Medicine at Fremont Health and Team Physician for Midland University Athletics (the state of Nebraska’s largest collegiate athletic department) and several area high schools. Dr. Byington joined the Prairie Orthopaedic & Plastic Surgery team in Spring 2017.
Dr. Byington comes from a family of medical professionals, with five physicians in his family. He attended Lincoln Pius X High School. He competed for the Creighton University Cross Country team before transferring and receiving his undergraduate degree from Nebraska Wesleyan University (NWU). At NWU, he was a 3 time NCAA National Champion and All-American in the 800 meter run for their Track and Field team. Additionally, he was a multi-time NCAA Academic All-American. After college he went on to run track professionally with the world-famous Santa Monica Track Club. He trained alongside many U.S. Olympians including: Carl Lewis (9-time Olympic Gold Medalist), Johnny Gray (American Record holder, Olympian, US Champion – 800 meter run) and Khadevis Robinson (multi-time Olympian and US Champion – 800 meter run).
Dr. Byington enjoys spending his free time with his wife, Amberly, and three children at home. He also enjoys staying active by running and playing golf.
