Dr. Matthew Heaton, M.D. received an associate degree in chemistry from Young Harris College where he attended on a baseball scholarship. Graduating with honors, he received his undergraduate degree in biochemistry and molecular biology from University of Georgia in Athens, Georgia. Dr. Heaton earned his medical degree from Mercer University School of Medicine in Macon, Georgia. Following medical school, he completed an internship at the University of Florida-Shands Department of Surgery in Gainesville, Florida. After his internship, he completed his orthopaedic surgery training at Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center, Overton Brooks VA Medical Center, and the Shriners Hospital for Children in Shreveport, Louisiana, where, in his last year, he served as chief resident. He then completed a one-year sports medicine fellowship at the Hughston Clinic in Columbus, Georgia.
In addition to general orthopaedics, Dr. Heaton specializes in sports medicine, arthroscopic treatment of shoulder, knee, and hip injuries, as well as shoulder replacement surgery. Dr. Heaton is board certified in orthopaedic surgery and a candidate member of the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine. He is the team orthopaedic physician for Lowndes High School Vikings and an associate team physician for Valdosta State University and Thomas University.
Dr. Heaton enjoys spending time with his wife and two daughters. He is an outdoorsman, who enjoys hunting and fishing, most especially fly fishing.

Dr. Heaton is very good about listening to his patients‘ concerns, symptoms, and treats appropriately. I appreciate him as my surgeon.
My 18 yr old went in there got a xray she most likely needs a mri told it is a hamstring and she has been swollen for over two weeks she has hyper extension and lupus. Seems once she informed of care source staff treated her differently.
Dr. Heaton is a gem of a doctor; and human being. His bedside manner is laid back while still being professional. He is extremely knowledgeable, in tune with the latest treatments and truly cares about improving his patient's quality of life. I had several shoulder problems in my dominant arm: a very large calcification, massive rotator cuff tear and SLAP II tear. He performed my arthroscopic surgery beautifully and tailored some details to accommodate my specific medical needs. I am nearly 6 weeks post surgery, in physical therapy and quite pleased with my progress. He is a great listener and takes his patient's concerns seriously (even the silly ones.) If hi you've been looking for a skilled, easy to converse with doctor, then I highly recommend him. I can't say enough about him and his Medical Asst Shannon. She's a great encourager and excels in putting you at ease. Great team!
