Dr. Matthew DeOrio specializes in the medical and surgical treatment of acute and chronic conditions of the foot and ankle including bones, cartilage, joints, muscles, tendons, and ligaments. He evaluates patients of all ages and treats sprains and fractures, as well as chronic deformity and arthritis that contributes to pain in the foot and ankle. His practice is 50% clinical and 50% surgical. He can make recommendations on shoe wear and help determine when it is appropriate to use over the counter shoe inserts and bracing versus custom orthotic and bracing.
He has a special interest in ankle replacement surgery with extensive experience with many prostheses including the Agility, Salto Talaris, STAR, and Infinity implants. He currently uses the Vantage, INBONE, and INVISION prostheses for primary and revision ankle replacement surgery.
Common conditions that Dr. DeOrio sees in clinic include forefoot problems such as bunions, hammertoes, and neuromas. Midfoot injuries include Lisfranc sprains, fractures, and arthritis with associated bone spurring that can cause difficulty with shoewear. Hindfoot conditions are also common and include painful pes planus (flatfeet), posterior tibial, peroneal, and Achilles tendon problems, ankle instability, and posttraumatic arthritis, as well as inflammatory arthritis (rheumatoid) and osteoarthritis.
Diabetes can have a significant impact on the foot and ankle due to alternation in blood flow and loss of protective sensation (neuropathy) that can in turn lead to skin breakdown and ulcers, as well as pain and deformity. Charcot arthropathy is a diabetic condition of the foot and ankle that can cause significant deformity and Dr. DeOrio can make recommendations on operative versus nonoperative treatment of these conditions.
After earning his medical degree from the University of South Florida, Dr. DeOrio completed his orthopaedic surgery residency at the Mayo Clinic and his foot and ankle fellowship at Duke University Medical Center.

The doctor is fine. The Orthopedic center is messed up. Not efficient at all. First of all when you call for an appointment you are asked if you want to be put in a que and they will save your place in line and call you back. That is great but waiting for several hours for a call back is not acceptable. My first time doing this I waited for several hours then stepped away from my phone to go to the toilet. Of course that is when I received the call back. I missed the call! Had to go through the entire process again! Went for my appointment today and had to fill in the same information I had filled out online on their computer in the waiting room. My appointment was for 10:50. I was seen by the doctor at 12:45. The staff and the doctor were great. The organization needs an overhaul.
Dr DeOrio has an awesome attitude and is very open with before, during, and surgery happenings! He replaced my Achilles tendon and I had very minimal pain after the surgery! Everyone at TOC is a Top Notch Professional! What an amazing a relaxing experience! Thank you all very much!
I was very pleased with his opinion and his explanation of my foot problems were on target with my pain and problems I have been having.
Dr DeOrio was my surgeon for a complex foot problem. He did an outstanding job on my surgery and I highly recommend him for any foot and Ankle needs. David M
