Dr. Matthew DeOrio specializes in the medical and surgical treatment of acute and chronic conditions of the foot and ankle including bones, cartilage, joints, muscles, tendons, and ligaments. He evaluates patients of all ages and treats sprains and fractures, as well as chronic deformity and arthritis that contributes to pain in the foot and ankle. His practice is 50% clinical and 50% surgical. He can make recommendations on shoe wear and help determine when it is appropriate to use over the counter shoe inserts and bracing versus custom orthotic and bracing.
He has a special interest in ankle replacement surgery with extensive experience with many prostheses including the Agility, Salto Talaris, STAR, and Infinity implants. He currently uses the Vantage, INBONE, and INVISION prostheses for primary and revision ankle replacement surgery.
Common conditions that Dr. DeOrio sees in clinic include forefoot problems such as bunions, hammertoes, and neuromas. Midfoot injuries include Lisfranc sprains, fractures, and arthritis with associated bone spurring that can cause difficulty with shoewear. Hindfoot conditions are also common and include painful pes planus (flatfeet), posterior tibial, peroneal, and Achilles tendon problems, ankle instability, and posttraumatic arthritis, as well as inflammatory arthritis (rheumatoid) and osteoarthritis.
Diabetes can have a significant impact on the foot and ankle due to alternation in blood flow and loss of protective sensation (neuropathy) that can in turn lead to skin breakdown and ulcers, as well as pain and deformity. Charcot arthropathy is a diabetic condition of the foot and ankle that can cause significant deformity and Dr. DeOrio can make recommendations on operative versus nonoperative treatment of these conditions.
