Dr. Matthew DeOrio specializes in the medical and surgical treatment of acute and chronic conditions of the foot and ankle including bones, cartilage, joints, muscles, tendons, and ligaments. He evaluates patients of all ages and treats sprains and fractures, as well as chronic deformity and arthritis that contributes to pain in the foot and ankle. His practice is 50% clinical and 50% surgical. He can make recommendations on shoe wear and help determine when it is appropriate to use over the counter shoe inserts and bracing versus custom orthotic and bracing.
He has a special interest in ankle replacement surgery with extensive experience with many prostheses including the Agility, Salto Talaris, STAR, and Infinity implants. He currently uses the Vantage, INBONE, and INVISION prostheses for primary and revision ankle replacement surgery.
Common conditions that Dr. DeOrio sees in clinic include forefoot problems such as bunions, hammertoes, and neuromas. Midfoot injuries include Lisfranc sprains, fractures, and arthritis with associated bone spurring that can cause difficulty with shoewear. Hindfoot conditions are also common and include painful pes planus (flatfeet), posterior tibial, peroneal, and Achilles tendon problems, ankle instability, and posttraumatic arthritis, as well as inflammatory arthritis (rheumatoid) and osteoarthritis.
Diabetes can have a significant impact on the foot and ankle due to alternation in blood flow and loss of protective sensation (neuropathy) that can in turn lead to skin breakdown and ulcers, as well as pain and deformity. Charcot arthropathy is a diabetic condition of the foot and ankle that can cause significant deformity and Dr. DeOrio can make recommendations on operative versus nonoperative treatment of these conditions.
After earning his medical degree from the University of South Florida, Dr. DeOrio completed his orthopaedic surgery residency at the Mayo Clinic and his foot and ankle fellowship at Duke University Medical Center.
Dr. DeOrio joined The Orthopaedic Center in Huntsville in 2008 and is fortunate to have a new foot and ankle partner, Dr. Brad Sabatini, who joined TOC in 2017.

I like the Doc and he's very reasonable.
He listens and answers your questions.
Great doctor.
Don’t recognize this fellow without a second look! It’s his long hair I suppose. I appreciate his wisdom and his time explaining exact status of my injury/the surgery/ followup plan! He’s direct, to the point!
Very nice Easy to understand Professional
Great visit
Good , relaxed doc. I like him
Best!
This was the worst visit to a doc that I have ever had. He was very rude and condensing towards me. I asked multiple times about the wound on my foot and how it can be treated. He ( and his nurse) shrugged their should and simply said “ just wait”. This is 2025 and there has to be some sort of care for patients after surgery ( even if they smoke cigarettes). However; both of them drugged my swelling off and pain and the open wound on my foot because I smoke. The nurse was going to give me something for the swelling but DeOrio, simply said just take advil. Again this was just a shrugged off. I was very upset by all this and simply walk out. I’ll will never see him again and I will also tell everyone I can about my experience with him. People should not be treated this was at all.
He a good surgeon and really cares about his patients. I would recommend him highly
