Dr. Matthew DeOrio specializes in the medical and surgical treatment of acute and chronic conditions of the foot and ankle including bones, cartilage, joints, muscles, tendons, and ligaments. He evaluates patients of all ages and treats sprains and fractures, as well as chronic deformity and arthritis that contributes to pain in the foot and ankle. His practice is 50% clinical and 50% surgical. He can make recommendations on shoe wear and help determine when it is appropriate to use over the counter shoe inserts and bracing versus custom orthotic and bracing.
He has a special interest in ankle replacement surgery with extensive experience with many prostheses including the Agility, Salto Talaris, STAR, and Infinity implants. He currently uses the Vantage, INBONE, and INVISION prostheses for primary and revision ankle replacement surgery.
Common conditions that Dr. DeOrio sees in clinic include forefoot problems such as bunions, hammertoes, and neuromas. Midfoot injuries include Lisfranc sprains, fractures, and arthritis with associated bone spurring that can cause difficulty with shoewear. Hindfoot conditions are also common and include painful pes planus (flatfeet), posterior tibial, peroneal, and Achilles tendon problems, ankle instability, and posttraumatic arthritis, as well as inflammatory arthritis (rheumatoid) and osteoarthritis.
Diabetes can have a significant impact on the foot and ankle due to alternation in blood flow and loss of protective sensation (neuropathy) that can in turn lead to skin breakdown and ulcers, as well as pain and deformity. Charcot arthropathy is a diabetic condition of the foot and ankle that can cause significant deformity and Dr. DeOrio can make recommendations on operative versus nonoperative treatment of these conditions.
After earning his medical degree from the University of South Florida, Dr. DeOrio completed his orthopaedic surgery residency at the Mayo Clinic and his foot and ankle fellowship at Duke University Medical Center.
Dr. DeOrio joined The Orthopaedic Center in Huntsville in 2008 and is fortunate to have a new foot and ankle partner, Dr. Brad Sabatini, who joined TOC in 2017.

He’s the absolute BEST!
Great Job, Very Professional, Best Experience, Fastest Doctors Appointment I've ever had.
Very efficient made options clear.
Explains things well.
VERY THROUGH WITH EXPLANATIONS OF PROBLEM AND INDICATIONS FOR SURGERY. VERY PERSONABLE CHAIR SIDE MANNER. I FELT CONFIDENT WITH DR. DeOrio as my Orthopaedic physician.
I am recovering from ankle surgery and so far so good. Dr. Deorio basically had to clean up the mess from the last surgeon after I walked in pain for over a year from my previous surgery. I had a much better experience with doctors and nurses using the spine and ortho facility rather than the surgery center.
He is the best hands down. Strongly recommend
Between poor and okay. Unhappy that I waited 2 hours after appointment time before he came in with no apology. Then bluntly asked why I was there and made me feel bad when I didn't recall exact diagnosis name from previous doctor/radiologist.
Dr. DeOrio did an amazing job on my ankle reconstruction. I am healing nicely.
