Dr. Leslie Sizemore, M.D., has a broad vision and perspective of medicine. That, she says, drew her to primary care.
“I’ve never pigeonholed myself into one specific thing,” she explains. “I’ve always wanted to treat all ages, the whole body, and the whole person.”
Having spent her formative years on St. Simons Island, Dr. Sizemore has a personal connection with the Coastal Empire. She pairs that with her continuing desire to forge a bond with her patients through medicine.
“In primary care, it’s all about the relationships you have with your patients,” she says, “and those relationships can be lifelong. And I love developing that rapport.”
Dr. Sizemore’s wide scope of care extends beyond “writing prescriptions.” In the past, this has involved reconnecting family members with an ailing relative and helping a patient and their family find the right hospice facility.
“Whether it’s through treatment or compassion, improving a patient’s quality of life is the most rewarding part of my job.”
According to Dr. Sizemore, the sweeping age range of her primary care clients keeps things interesting. Treating patients ages 4 and older means dealing with an array of ailments such as the common cold, urological issues, assistance with healthy aging, and more.
Primary care also allows her to provide women’s health services.
“When it comes to women’s health,” Dr. Sizemore says, “many females prefer visiting a female physician. I’m grateful to provide those services for ladies. And I can treat the whole family, too. I don’t feel limited in what I’m able to do for my patients.”
Being able to treat such a wide range of patients and medical issues requires a breadth of medical knowledge. Dr. Sizemore stays on top of the latest data by reading as many medical journals as possible. In addition, she attends American Academy of Family Physicians conferences on both the state and national level, which helps her remain in tune with breaking developments, new treatments, and contemporary best practices.
“I enjoy staying on my toes,” she explains. “We’re perpetual students, because primary care medicine is constantly changing. I try to be the best physician I can be by always striving to learn something new.”
As part of a SouthCoast Health family care practice, Dr. Sizemore works alongside other physicians, sharing her professional opinion with and receiving insight from her colleagues.
“We can bounce ideas off of each other and discuss different medical scenarios,” she says.
When a case calls for a physician outside of the primary care wheelhouse, Dr. Sizemore says she and her contemporaries have SouthCoast Health specialists “at our fingertips.”
Outside of the office, Dr. Sizemore enjoys spending time with her son and stepson, going on family golf outings, cooking, and dining out with her husband.
