Dr. Hammontree’s interests include robotic-assisted laparoscopic kidney surgery including nephrectomies, partial nephrectomies, Ureteropelvic Junction (UPJ) repair, and cryoablation of kidney tumors. He also offers cryoablation of the prostate for prostate cancer, reconstructive urology including neobladders, and female urology including complex pelvic prolapse repair with robotic surgery.

Dr. Lee Hammontree is a graduate of Lipscomb University and a native of Nashville. He obtained his medical degree in 1988 from The University of Tennessee College of Medicine, Memphis, Tennessee. Dr. Hammontree went on to complete an internship and residency in urology at the University of Tennessee, Memphis.
Dr. Hammontree initially spent 8 years in private practice. During this period he led in introducing laparoscopic urologic surgery to Alabama. He taught courses for other urologists and gynecologists in laparoscopic pelvic floor reconstruction. He has proctored numerous others in laparoscopic kidney surgery and has performed over 3,000 complex laparoscopic procedures. Dr. Hammontree became a member of the faculty of the Division of Urology at the University of Alabama at Birmingham in 2002. During this time he had a busy University practice and served as Chief of Urology at the Veterans Administration Hospital while training urology residents and teaching medical students. He participated in clinical and NIH-funded research and the fellowship program for female urology and urogynecology. His work has been published in several peer-reviewed journals and has been a reviewer for the Journal of Urology and the Journal of Surgery and Urology. He is active in the Southeastern Section of the American Urologic Association and serves on the Board of Directors.
In January of 2006, Dr. Hammontree returned to Urology Centers of Alabama, PC where he continues to offer excellence in minimally invasive (laparoscopic) and robotic kidney and bladder surgery. He is the first urologist in the region to offer cryosurgery for small kidney tumors and cryosurgery of the prostate. He remains a recognized expert in pelvic prolapse and other female urologic problems.
Dr. Hammontree serves on the board of directors of the Southeastern Section of the American Urological Association. The AUA is an international organization of urologists numbering more than 13,000 with the southeastern section being composed of over 2,100 urologists representing nine southeastern states in the United States. This association that Dr. Hammontree is a board member of is dedicated to the “study, diagnosis, and treatment of diseases of the genitourinary tract” in adult and pediatric patients.
