Dr. Stayner was accepted to the University of Washington Medical school in 1992 but instead opted to pursue a football career with the Seattle Seahawks who took him in the ninth round of the entry draft that spring.

In 2002, Dr. Stayner accepted an invitation to practice sports medicine as a fellow at the prestigious Kerlan-Jobe Orthopaedic Clinic, where he provided care for athletes from the professional teams in Los Angeles, including members of the Lakers, Dodgers, Kings, and Mighty Ducks. Dr. Stayner also treated amateur athletes who suffered injuries in recreational sports such as rock climbing, swimming, ballet, skiing, cycling, and volleyball.
He is certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgey and also has sub-speciality certification in Orthopaedic Sports Medicine. He is currently the Orthopaedic Physician for the University of Montana Grizzlies. Dr. Stayner has three active daughters and a wonderful wife who is a physical therapist.
