Dr Baumgarten is always pleasant. When he enters the exam room he always has a smile on his face. He takes the time to actually listen to the patient, asking questions to get a clearer picture of their problem. He then clearly explains what the problem is and what treatments are available. He lets the patient make the decision on the treatments then proceeds from there. It’s nice to have a doctor who cares so much about the patient to include them in the treatment process.

Dr. Baumgarten takes the time to listen and helped me come up with a plan - was patient with my questions and discussed all my options. He is my husband’s Dr as well - we appreciate him so much !

About Dr. Baumgarten Dr. Baumgarten is fellowship-trained in sports medicine and knee and shoulder surgery. He is the first and only physician in South Dakota to be elected to the prestigious American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons Society. In addition, he was the first fellowship-trained hip arthroscopy specialist to care for patients with hip pain in South Dakota.
Dr. Baumgarten served as an Associate Physician with the New York Mets baseball team while completing his fellowship at the Hospital for Special Surgery. During residency, he trained with the team physicians of the St. Louis Rams, Blues, and Cardinals sports teams and is the current Head Team Physician for the Sioux Falls Stampede and the Sioux Falls Canaries.
Dr. Baumgarten is passionate about improving the quality of orthopaedic and musculoskeletal care. He feels that by performing both basic science and clinical research, he can potentially help millions of people improve the quality of their lives, in addition to the patients that he sees here at the Orthopedic Institute. Dr. Baumgarten has been presented with the Charles S. Neer Award in 2011 and 2013 for the best shoulder research performed that year, and the O’Donoghue Award in 2014 for his research on ACL injuries. He is quoted in an in-depth article by ESPN on Human Growth Hormone. A very interesting read for anyone, from athletes to farmers, who are trying to recover more quickly.
When Dr. Baumgarten isn’t caring for his patients or on the sideline helping athletes, he can be found participating in sports, playing and listening to music with his children, reading, and spending time with his family
