Dr. Kathleen Hogan is a board-certified, fellowship-trained total joint specialist. She chose to specialize in hip and knee replacements because these surgeries make such a significant difference in people’s lives.
“Patients come to see me and they can barely walk because they’re so disabled by their arthritis. Within a few weeks of joint replacement they are often walking better than they were before surgery. Many people tell me, with tears in their eyes, that I gave them their life back.”
Many people come to Dr. Hogan asking her whether they are a good candidate for knee or hip replacement.
“The question I ask is “How does your arthritis affect your life?” Some people can manage their arthritis pain with cortisone injections and physical therapy. But, if your arthritis pain gets to the point where it keeps you from doing the things that you love, that’s when you should think about having your hip or knee replaced.”
Dr. Hogan is always looking for ways to help her patients recover and get moving faster. She is particularly interested in improving pain management.
“Although joint replacement in the past was extremely painful, we have become much better at managing postoperative pain by treating it before it occurs.
For example, most patients benefit from spinal anesthesia and nerve blocks before surgery. This helps to prevent your brain from experiencing pain during the surgery. You wake up feeling as if you had a good nap rather than with a hangover.
Then, post-surgically, I like to treat pain with multiple types of medications which minimizes the need for narcotics and speeds recovery.”
What is Dr. Hogan most proud of? Her medical mission work.
“I am part of a unique group of orthopaedic surgeons who travel to third world countries to improve the lives of people by improving mobility through joint replacement. WOGO- Women’s Orthopaedic Global Outreach – is composed of 7 fellowship trained, female surgeons and a team of 40+ nurses, scrub techs, therapist, and volunteers. It is a unique group as only about 5-7% of practicing orthopedic surgeons are women, and even fewer specialize in joint replacement.
As a member of WOGO I have traveled to Tanzania, Cuba, and to the Democratic Republic of Congo where we did the first knee replacements ever performed in that country. We give the gift of mobility and of hope to people with severe arthritis who have no other opportunity to have this life altering surgery.

Dr. Hogan is professional, direct and personable. I’m very pleased with her approach to my knee replacement surgery thus far.
Dr. Hogan's bedside manner was good, however, she did not spend explaining what may or may not be the outcomes with the cortisol shots. As well, she said it wouldn't hurt, just feel uncomfortable. Not the case at all. The injection was painful on my left knee, i kept thinking is it possible she was hitting bone? The pain overnight was pretty severe and I have a very high pain tolerance. And this was in the better of the 2 knees. In addition no information about how the cortisone shots would impact my high blood pressure--noted in my chart or on my blood sugar. Thankful for the internet. Finally, thankfully I asked about pain management afterwards as she didnt offer, just ready to come in and inject the cortisone. The positive? The staff is super friendly. My right knee which is the most problematic and feels good. it felt pretty good going in but it is great that is even better. The better of the 2 knees still painful. Bc of her good reviews ill likely go back but have a conversation
