Dr. Nowatzke was born in Muncie, Indiana, and grew up in Ohio. He graduated cum laude from Miami University in Oxford, Ohio, and subsequently graduated from Central Michigan University College of Medicine in Saginaw, MI. Dr. Nowatzke completed his internal medicine internship and residency at Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville, TN. He stayed at Vanderbilt to complete his cardiology fellowship. During his training, he authored several academic publications and book chapters spanning topics from healthcare delivery and quality improvement to cardio-oncology.
His interest in cardio-oncology led him to spend a dedicated year of training in this subspeciality and obtain a certificate acknowledging his unique expertise. He also developed a skillset in multi-modality imaging, including echocardiography, nuclear cardiology, cardiac computed tomography (CT), and vascular imaging. Additionally, he was part of quality improvement initiatives focused on promoting efficient care and meeting patient needs in a complex medical system.
