Dr. Joseph Brindise, D.O., is a Board Certified, Fellowship-trained, Orthopaedic Spinal Surgeon. He specializes in surgical and non-surgical spinal care of both adult and pediatric patients, from neck and back pain to complex reconstructive spinal procedures. He has a passion for minimally invasive and endoscopic spinal surgery, as well as spinal disc replacement and motion-sparing (motion-preserving) surgery. Dr. Brindise is an expert in surgical spinal care at all levels of the spine and is also a firm believer in aiding the body’s ability to heal itself through conservative treatment modalities whenever possible.
Dr. Brindise obtained a degree with Honors in Mechanical Engineering from Purdue, then went on to graduate from medical school as Valedictorian from Chicago College of Osteopathic Medicine at Midwestern University. During that time, he was also selected for the prestigious predoctoral osteopathic manipulative medicine fellowship focusing on neuromusculoskeletal medicine and osteopathic manipulative treatment, with special focus on spinal biomechanics. Following medical school, Dr. Brindise completed his orthopedic surgical residency through Michigan State University at Beaumont Health – Farmington Hills, where he served as chief resident. Dr. Brindise went on to sub-specialize in spinal surgery, completing a combined orthopaedic and neurosurgical spine surgery fellowship at the prestigious Houston Methodist Hospital in Houston, Texas. Concurrently, he worked with world-class surgeons at MD Anderson Cancer Center and Texas Children’s Hospital. Before Suburban Orthopaedics, Dr. Brindise practiced at the Illinois Spine Institute in Schaumburg and Crystal Lake, and Romano Orthopaedic Center in River Forest and Lombard.
Dr. Brindise is passionate about collaborating with and educating his patients about their spinal conditions. He thinks the most important thing when trying to understand a patient’s back pain is listening to them. He wants them to feel like they’re talking to a friend or family member. Taking into consideration individual concerns and needs, he develops a treatment strategy unique and tailored to each patient. His goal is to try to treat patients non-operatively, whether it be through activity modification, medications, physical therapy, or injections. When surgery would be of benefit, he tries to approach surgery in the most minimally invasive way possible. Dr. Brindise routinely performs all aspects of spinal surgery involving the cervical, thoracic, lumbar, and sacral spine. He addresses a wide array of spinal conditions, from herniated discs, spinal stenosis, spondylolisthesis, and spinal arthritis/degenerative disc disease to spinal trauma/compression fractures and scoliosis. He is also able to provide corrective procedures for failed spinal surgery.
Scholastically, Dr. Brindise has delivered numerous lectures, poster presentations, and workshops, as well as published peer-reviewed articles and book chapters regarding the spine, orthopaedics, and osteopathic manipulative medicine. He is also an active consultant for the spinal industry, helping to develop and engineer new cutting-edge medical devices, implants, and biologics.
Outside of medicine, Dr. Brindise enjoys spending time with outdoor activities, including distance running, golfing, rowing, cycling, and attempting to master the art of meat smoking and barbecue. Originally from the Chicago suburbs, Dr. Brindise is excited to be planting his own family’s roots with his wife and four boys.
