Dr. John M. Small, M.D., is board certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery and fellowship trained in spine surgery. Since 1996, Dr. Small has treated patients seeking cervical, thoracic and lumbar spine care.
With advanced training in endoscopic and microscopic surgery, Dr. Small maintains many ongoing clinical research projects. He is a member of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons and has made numerous presentations to his peers about spine surgery.
He is an Associate Assistant Professor at USF Department of Orthopaedics and is the University of South Florida Residency Site Director at the University Community Hospital.
Dr. Small is a team consultant at the University of South Florida and has been a Course Chair at Selby Spine Conference since 2002. He has been named a Best Doctor of America every year since 2005.
Dr. Small’s personal interests are running, biking and participating in triathlons.

Dr. Small is the “best.” Very kind, knowledgeable, and mostly , he let’s you ask questions without hesitation, and he will answer your questions in until he feels certain you have a solid understanding of everything.. Dr. J. Small is a wonderful, competent spinal surgeon. A PT friend of mine asked a local neurosurgeon he knows about Dr J. Small. The neurosurgeon said that Dr. Small is the best spinal surgeon in the area. I found that he is thorough and considerate, and he spent time to discuss the details of the surgery.
Great surgeon and excellent bedside manner. I would recommend him to anyone needing spinal surgery.

Such a empathetic surgeon with a vast knowledge that put me such at ease with the type of surgery I needed, spinal disc replacement. I was extremely nervous about it and learning about his experience and skills made me feel sure about going through with it. Highly recommend doctor and such a pleasant man.
In my 71 years I've never met a more dedicated, skilled, and kind physician. I thank God he was referred to me and became my doctor.
