Dr. John M. Small, M.D., is board certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery and fellowship trained in spine surgery. Since 1996, Dr. Small has treated patients seeking cervical, thoracic and lumbar spine care.
With advanced training in endoscopic and microscopic surgery, Dr. Small maintains many ongoing clinical research projects. He is a member of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons and has made numerous presentations to his peers about spine surgery.
He is an Associate Assistant Professor at USF Department of Orthopaedics and is the University of South Florida Residency Site Director at the University Community Hospital.
Dr. Small is a team consultant at the University of South Florida and has been a Course Chair at Selby Spine Conference since 2002. He has been named a Best Doctor of America every year since 2005.
Dr. Small’s personal interests are running, biking and participating in triathlons.

Dr. John M. Small at Florida Orthopaedic Institute was outstanding. From the moment he walked in, he was professional, warm, and easy to talk to. He has an excellent bedside manner and truly takes the time to listen. He explained my condition and treatment options in a way that was clear and easy to understand, without making me feel rushed or overwhelmed. You can tell he’s highly knowledgeable, but what really stood out to me was how comfortable and confident he made me feel during the appointment. I’m very grateful for the care I received and would absolutely recommend Dr. Small to anyone needing spine care.

Dr. Small was extremely thorough, knowledgeable, detailed, understanding and reassuring. Dr. Small is extremely personable and good-natured with a very positive and supportive attitude. He gave us more than enough time upon our visit with him.

Great doctor
Pleasant personality. Clearly explained the procedure and what to expect. Advent Hospital Nursing staff was positive and clear with their actions. Surgical Results met my expectations.
Dr. Small took the time to fully explain my situation, he answered all my questions and provided guidance for next steps. Dr. Small took time with me which is rare and only left our appointment when we finished. He has amazing communication skills and compassion and I'm glad he was recommended to me. He will be my doctor and surgeon when the time comes.
