Dr. James Patterson, M.D. treats patients at both our Denver and Lakewood offices. He is a Denver native and lives in Genesee with his wife Ann and Yorkshire terrier “Eloise”.
He graduated from Cherry Creek High School and spent one year living in Norway as an American Field Service exchange student. His undergraduate degree was from Brown University in 1976 and he completed medical school at the University of Colorado in 1981. After serving his medical internship year in Christchurch, New Zealand, he returned to the University of Colorado for a residency in Ophthalmology.
Upon finishing his residency Dr. Patterson joined Colorado Ophthalmology Associates as a comprehensive ophthalmologist specializing in cataract and refractive surgery. He has been performing LASIK and PRK surgery since the excimer laser was first approved in the United States in 1996. He is board-certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology, is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, and was an Assistant Clinical Professor of Ophthalmology at the University of Colorado for over 25 years. He is a member and past president of the Colorado Society of Eye Physicians and Surgeons, and a Fellow of the American Academy of Ophthalmology.
Outside of his rewarding profession Dr. Patterson enjoys bicycling, skiing and spending time with his wife and their adult children and families.
Dr Patterson is doing the lords work. He is a wonderful and caring soul. I am so fortunate that he performed my first cataract procedure and before he begins the retirement chapter of his life he referred me to one of his associates to perform my next cataract procedure. To thank god every day for connecting us together. I love and adore that man!

Dr Patterson has been an excellent eye care provider to me for over 30 years. He’s obviously extremely competent and he always takes time to explain specific issues, and answers questions thoroughly. And he is always friendly. Sorry to see him retire.
