Dr. Paauw was very professional. This young man's demeanor showed that he really loved his job. Dr. Paauw smiled and spoke to patients waiting to see him as he passed through the waiting room. Dr. Paauw was excellent with my
mother’s eye care and answered all our questions. He had referred her last year to Dr. Herndon at Duke for her very involved glaucoma surgery and that was an excellent recommendation.

James Paauw, M.D., specializes in glaucoma and cataract surgery. He earned his medical degree from the University of Michigan Medical School in Ann Arbor, MI, with distinction in research. He then completed a general surgery internship and ophthalmology residency through Texas A&M in Temple, TX. During this time, he served as co-editor of Career Physician Briefings in Ophthalmology, and in his final year of residency, he acted as chief resident for the program.
Dr. Paauw completed a glaucoma fellowship at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine’s Bascom Palmer Eye Institute. He has a great deal of research experience and is a prolific writer and presenter on eye care topics. Among his charitable activities, Dr. Paauw has participated in multiple ophthalmology mission trips to Mexico, Kenya, and Haiti. Dr. Paauw is board-certified with the American Board of Ophthalmology. Dr. Paauw has been practicing medicine since 2010.
