Dr. Doss grew up on a farm in South Georgia, where he learned the foundations for a strong work ethic early in life. He pursued a career in medicine after graduating from the University of Georgia, which led him to attend Mercer University School of Medicine, not far from UGA. However, it wasn’t until after graduating from medical school that he was first introduced to Tennessee during his internship at the University of Tennessee Medical Center. During that time, he and his wife grew fond of the welcoming community and the beauty of the surrounding mountains.
After graduating from residency in ophthalmology at Eastern Virginia School of Medicine in 2008 and becoming board certified in 2009, he spent 2 years practicing in the High Country of Boone, N.C. before returning with his family to Knoxville to join University Eye Surgeons.
Since 2010, Dr. Doss has become one of the area’s leading cataract surgeons and feels blessed to have had the opportunity to improve vision for many thousands in the community. He is also honored to have been chosen to perform surgery on so many of the area’s leading physicians, practicing surgeons, professors, lawyers, and even former US Ambassadors. Despite his busy practice, he always takes the time to thoroughly review and discuss the surgery and lens options with every patient, as he knows how important this decision, like the decision of which eye surgeon to trust with your vision, can be. For this reason, each surgical patient is brought back for exclusive pre-operative measurements and further lens counseling with his refractive counselor prior to their surgery.
Dr. Doss continues to enjoy living in Knoxville with his wife Becky, and his teenage children, Mary Campbell and William, and their two Siberian Forest cats, Tigger and Penny. As a family, they travel whenever possible and enjoy visiting many of our national parks for hiking and backpacking adventures, as well as local kayaking and attempts at fly fishing. Dr. Doss is an avid backpacker and practices outdoor photography and swimming for exercise.
Although his main focus is surgery, Dr. Doss also has a number of visits available for medical eye exams and is happy to see new patients from other colleagues or even patient referrals for non-surgical examinations, second opinions, and ophthalmologic treatments.

Dr barely spoke to me during the visit. I asked him to speak up because I'm hard of hearing he did but seem to get frustrated with my questions. I literally was asking him a question and he said some word to the nurse stood up and walked out while I was speaking to him that is completely unacceptable. Then the nurse told me that evidently my appointment was made with the wrong doctor which I didn't do I called in for a follow-up and I was placed with him. After he left the nurse told me that I was supposed to see the front of the eye doctor not the back of the eye doctor which is what evidently he specializes in. He also questioned why I was on steroids that I've been put on over a decade ago for maintenance of my herpes after after I had shingles. It was an unacceptable visit. Everyone else was great the people up front the two techs are nurses that I saw that examined my eye and the nurse who actually explained what the doctor said because the doctor couldn't be bothered too.
Just like death and taxes… the care that I receive from Dr. Doss never fails.
Who knows, running so far behind that I had to leave before ever being seen.
He is a good Dr. knows what he is doing,I like his staff they are friendly and very helpful.
Goes the extra mile to ensure that I understand results. Appreciate that questions are answered without making me ridiculous for asking.
Wait time was excessive… but it may have been an unusually busy day. My appointment was 1:00 and I was there until after 3:30.
He’s so patient and skilled I feel like I’m in e excellent
